About Koh Kret
Koh Kret, a small island not far from Bangkok, is a hidden gem that offers a unique experience for travelers. This island is a haven for food lovers, with a plethora of food stalls offering typical Thai food, as well as rare snacks and treats that are hard to find on the mainland. These stalls are only available during weekends, making it a special treat for those who manage to visit during this time. The island is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle, although walking is recommended due to the narrow pathways. The stalls are located next to one another, allowing visitors to take in the sights and smells of the food being prepared. The pathway around the island is the circumference, with only a section taken up by the food stalls. The remaining parts of the pathway are perfect for exploration, especially if you have some form of transport. There are motorbike taxis available at certain points of the pathway, such as where the markets end, ready to take you further for a small fee.
Getting to Koh Kret is an adventure in itself. One can take a bus from Victory Monument BTS station to Pak Kret, followed by a short walk to Wat Bo temple. From there, it's a walk through the temple and along the shops lining the road to Wat Sanam Nuea temple. The pier to take the boat over to Koh Kret island is located at the back of this temple. The boat fare is minimal and is paid upon reaching Koh Kret.
The island is also home to a great market, filled with vendors selling a variety of items. It's not overwhelming, making it a great place to wander through. There are plenty of food options, making it a hit with families. The market is less known by tourists, making it a unique experience.
For those who prefer to explore on their own, there are boats that go directly to Koh Kret from Sathorn Pier. The journey is pleasant and takes about an hour. Once on the island, you are free to explore at your own pace. There are small weekend markets selling food, pottery factories, and photo studios. The island is also home to charming cafes and restaurants, as well as a local brewery known as 'Chit Beer'.
Koh Kret offers a different scenery from Bangkok's city life. One can hire a bicycle and explore the island, enjoying the food market and the various stalls. There are also temples to visit and a clay pottery place to explore. The island is also home to an oyster restaurant that comes highly recommended. For those who enjoy a cold beer, Chitbeer bar is a popular place, although there are other places to enjoy a drink as well.
The island also offers boat rides to see the floating market and the way of life of the Mon people. There are also opportunities to make merit at different temples. For those who love craft beer and live entertainment, Chet Beer is a must-visit. It serves some of the cheapest craft beer and gourmet burgers, making it a popular spot on the island.
In conclusion, Koh Kret is a unique destination that offers a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its food stalls, markets, temples, and natural beauty, it's a place that's sure to leave a lasting impression on any traveler.
