About 2 Color River
The merging point of the Mun and Mekong rivers is a sight to behold, especially for those with a keen eye for color. The two rivers, each with their unique hue, converge at this spot, creating a spectacle that has drawn many visitors. However, the ability to discern the two colors may depend on one's visual acuity or perhaps, their imagination. Some visitors have reported that the rivers appeared brown to them, suggesting that the distinct colors might be more evident at certain times of the year.As the calendar turns to June, the two colors of the rivers seem to return, albeit in an unexpected way. The Mekong, often referred to as the blue Mekong, has been affected by the lack of water flow caused by Chinese dams and dry weather. Meanwhile, some rainfall in Ubon has darkened the Moon river. The difference in color may not be dramatic, but a distinct line can be observed where the two rivers meet. The lookout point, located next to Wat Khong Chiam, offers an interesting view of this natural phenomenon and is a must-see for anyone visiting Khong Chiam.
However, not all visitors have been lucky enough to witness the two colors. Some have reported seeing both rivers in a shade of blue, resulting in a picturesque view of a single, blue river. This suggests that the time of visit might play a crucial role in experiencing the two colors. Some visitors have suggested visiting in April for the best chance to see the two colors.
The confluence of the two rivers is located at the easternmost village of Thailand, near Laos. During times when both rivers have little water, it can be challenging to see the two colors. Some visitors have reported little to see during their visit in February, recommending others to choose a better time of the year for their visit.
Despite the varying experiences, the meeting point of the Mun and Mekong rivers is worth a visit, especially if you are in the neighborhood. There is no entry fee at the river view points, and ample parking spaces are available. Depending on the time of the day and light conditions, the river can indeed display two colors. The calm and serene environment adds to the charm of the place.
For those who make the drive from Ubon, the viewpoint and surrounding area offer an interesting experience. Visitors have reported seeing a very distinct difference in the colors of the two rivers as they meet. The area also boasts a few little shops and a very good coffee shop, making it a worthwhile visit. Some visitors have even shared memorable encounters with the friendly locals who own the shops. The confluence of the Mekong and Moon rivers, with their distinct colors, is indeed a sight worth seeing.
