About Ao Ton Sai

The island in question is a place of undeniable beauty, a tropical paradise that has the power to take one's breath away. However, it seems to be struggling under the weight of its own popularity. The island's infrastructure, particularly its sewage system, appears to be under immense strain, leading to unpleasant odors and sights in certain areas. The Tonsai area, for instance, is described as having a stream that looks almost radioactive and a pervasive smell of sewage. Litter is a common sight, with piles of rubble and broken items scattered around. This is not the charming, rustic scene one might expect from a Thai island, but rather a place that is creaking under the strain of too many visitors.

The island's nightlife, once a marvel to behold, has also seen a decline in recent years. It has been compared to a mini Ibiza, with bars selling cheap, sugar-infused drinks and young tourists getting carted off in vehicles due to excessive drinking. The streets are dirty, and it's not uncommon to see drunk teens staggering about. It seems the island is catering more towards a younger market, which has led to concerns about its future.

Despite these issues, there are still parts of the island that retain their charm. One such spot is a secluded beach where the water is warm and clear. However, visitors should be aware of the long tide, which can cause the beach to disappear completely depending on the day and time. This requires some planning, but it's worth it for the peace and tranquility this spot offers.

The busiest area on the island is Tonsai, which serves as the central business district. This is where the main pier is located, with boats and ferries arriving from Phuket, Krabi, and other small islands. Upon arrival, visitors are required to pay a municipal charge of 20 baht to help keep the island clean. Tonsai is home to many restaurants, food shops, and souvenir shops, and it stays awake until late at night. There are also banks and ATM machines for convenience. One of the highlights of Tonsai is the famous Phi Phi viewpoint, a must-visit spot for anyone staying on the island for a few days.

For those seeking a quieter experience, TonSai beach offers a great alternative to the notorious full moon parties of Phi Phi or Koh Phangan. The beach is lovely, although the tide can be quick in going in and out, leading to a few scrapes on rocks if one isn't careful. The beach has a small number of bars and restaurants, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Beach bungalows are available for rent at a reasonable price.

However, not all experiences on the island are positive. Some visitors have reported being treated poorly by the locals. Instances of rudeness and selling rotten fruit have been reported. Accommodation, too, can be hit or miss, with some visitors finding their lodgings to be overpriced and far from the seafront.

In conclusion, while the island has its charms, it also has its share of problems. Overcrowding, pollution, and a decline in the quality of nightlife are all issues that need to be addressed. However, for those willing to look past these issues, the island's natural beauty and quieter spots can still offer a memorable experience.
