About Ban Sao Nak
The journey begins with a bit of a challenge, as the location is somewhat hidden and not immediately easy to find. However, the local Tourist Office staff are always ready to lend a helping hand, guiding visitors to this historical gem. The site holds a fascinating history, with connections to an English gentleman born in Lynton, Western Australia, who was the son of the teacher from the famous story, "The King and I".The destination is Lampang, one of the most beloved towns in Thailand. Among its many attractions, Ban Sao Nam stands out. This house, built in 1895 from teak for a Burmese merchant, seems to have frozen in time. The roof is still supported by over a hundred teak columns, providing a cool refuge even in the heat of the day. The entrance fee is a mere 50 baht, a small price to pay for a step back in time.
The structures were built by a Mon family, offering an intriguing blend of Thai and Burmese architecture, woodwork, and memorabilia. The black and white photos, despite their age, still retain their vibrancy, offering a captivating glimpse into the past. The furnishings speak of a time of grandeur, a testament to the wealth of the family who once lived here. However, visitors are advised to watch their heads, as the roof rafters are uneven and drooping, a charming, if somewhat hazardous, testament to the age of the house.
The private museum is another highlight of Lampang. It features an amazing Lanna Thai old wooden house, supported by 116 pillars. The house is filled with beautiful antique furniture and vintage Thai interiors, offering a unique insight into the region's past.
Nestled in a neighborhood of old wooden houses, this private museum offers an excellent glimpse into the Lampang of yesteryear. It's a perfect stop for a bike jaunt, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local history and culture.
The house, which is over 150 years old, is famous for its authentic nature and the preservation of a large number of original features. The special interest is that it is supported on 150 Teak pillars and the entire house has sagged and bent over the years! There is a very small charge for visiting, and it is a low key experience where you just walk about and investigate at your leisure. After exploring, visitors are treated to delicious Lychee Drink and Rice Cakes.
The site features a couple of old style Thai houses, like a museum both inside and outside. The inside is particularly impressive, with some really nice old style furniture and other artifacts. The outside, while charming, could benefit from some restoration. The woman selling tickets and taking care of the site is very nice and friendly, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere of the place. This historical site is well worth an hour of your time, offering a unique and fascinating glimpse into Thailand's past.
