About Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (Bacc)
The Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) is a hidden gem that many may have passed by without realizing the treasure trove it holds within. This nine-story building is a haven for art enthusiasts, filled with a stunning array of artwork. The pieces on display are diverse and intriguing, some of them quite large, adding to the grandeur of the place. The building itself is very open, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The lower levels of the BACC are home to a variety of small cafes, coffee shops, and tiny stores. These establishments not only provide a place for visitors to relax and refresh, but also offer a platform for supporting local businesses. The center is a great place to find unique gifts, with the variety of items available in the small shops. The best part? There is no entrance fee to this art sanctuary.
The BACC is not just about static displays. It hosts a variety of events, such as the Bangkok Biennale, where visitors can enjoy a plethora of art in one go. However, those with a fear of heights might want to take the elevator to the upper floors, as the free-standing escalators can be a bit daunting. Regardless, the delightful art on display is worth the adventure.
The architecture of the BACC is as interesting as the art it houses. The center often features exhibitions, such as the “Citizen Make Change” and “Urban Progress”, which are presented in both Thai and English. The center also showcases the works of young artists, providing them with a platform to display their talent. The gallery of Prasart Chandrasupa is another highlight of the center.
The BACC is more than just an art center. It is a place where one can relax and spend a couple of hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It offers a good mix of art, artsy shops, small restaurants, and cafes. A notable mention is the Baan Silapin Noodle shop on the second floor, known for its delicious noodles and friendly staff.
The BACC is a place for people of all ages. The exhibitions change according to various activities, such as art exhibitions, movies, music, and creative design. There is also an art library for those who wish to delve deeper into the world of art. The center also houses a shop and a coffee corner, adding to the overall experience.
From the outside, the BACC may not look like much, but the interior architecture is stunning. Even if there isn't a great deal to see art-wise on a particular visit, the center offers a wonderful place of air-conditioned calm amidst the frantic pace of the city outside. There are plenty of places to have reasonably priced coffee and look at artisan stalls, making it a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.
