About Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy

Nestled just four blocks from BTS On Nut, off Sukhumvit Road on Soi 75/1, lies a Thai cooking school that offers a unique culinary experience. The school provides regular Thai cooking classes, private classes, professional chef courses, fruit carving, and team building events. All the frying, preparation, instruction, and eating is done in an air-conditioned classroom, equipped with new fryers and cooking stations, making it a comfortable environment for all participants.

However, the private course experience may not be for everyone. Some have found it disappointing, as most of the ingredients are prepared in advance and put on little plates in the exact quantities needed. This leaves the participant to merely mix and put the ingredients in the pan, which may not provide the full cooking experience one might expect. The pace can be fast, and the chef may do most of the work without explaining. Language barriers can also be an issue, as some chefs may not speak much English, making it difficult to answer questions. Some have also raised concerns about the sanitation of the food, with instances of ants in the peanuts and room temperature meat. While some dishes are delicious, others can be mediocre, and the recipes provided may not match what was actually cooked in the class.

On the other hand, many have found the cooking class to be a fabulous experience. Participants meet at a shopping mall near On Nut train station and are given a leaflet to choose five dishes they wish to cook. The Cooking Academy is a short walk away, where participants leave their bags before visiting the nearby market. The market visit is informative and interesting, with explanations about various ingredients used in Thai cooking. Upon return to the Cooking Academy, all ingredients are laid out at the work stations, ready for preparing and cooking. The tutors are known to speak excellent English and are engaging and humorous. The cooking process is well-organised, with dirty dishes, pans, and utensils replaced with clean ones by the many helpers. The Thai food cooked is flavoursome, and participants are given a Certificate at the end of the course and access to a website with all recipes.

Some have described the cooking experience as average, with the school having a rundown look. The regular chef may not always be available, and a chef from the 5-day class may present the class instead. After the class, participants are given a website for recipes, which may not be that of the school. While it is not the most expensive school, there are cheaper schools that may offer a better overall experience.

The cooking school is a wonderful way to spend a half-day in Bangkok. Everything is well-organised, from the meeting at the station to the layout at the tables and the ingredients. The course is enjoyable, and the instructor provides a lot of information about Thai food and spices. The class size is small, making it a comfortable learning environment and a great way to meet people from around the world.

However, some have found that the cooking course focuses more on assembling ingredients rather than actual cooking. While the facilities at the cooking school are first-rate and the staff are friendly and helpful, the course structure may not provide a comprehensive cooking experience. The staff are efficient, preparing most of the food in advance and laying it out on trays. This makes the process simple, but it may not provide the opportunity to learn to think like a Thai chef. The teacher is friendly but may lack the experience and insight of a true culinary teacher. The class is managed well, but the course may feel rushed and could benefit from being longer.

Despite these criticisms, many have enjoyed their time at the cooking school and plan to return. The school is clean, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. The market tour is short but informative, introducing participants to different leafy greens and spices used in Thai cooking. The recipes are great and easy to follow, and participants have their own cooking stations. The staff are ready to clear out used pots and pans, and participants get to eat what they prepared. The instructors are animated and entertaining, sharing stories and jokes. The recipes are easy to follow, and the instructors do their best to speak in English.

The cooking school comes highly recommended by many. The class is enjoyable, and the staff are lovely. Everything is carefully thought out and highly organised. The market tour is a highlight, providing an opportunity to learn about local produce. For anyone looking to do a cooking class in Bangkok, this is the place to go.
