About Big C : Chiang Mai

The Big C supermarket is a prominent feature in Thailand, particularly on the super highway outside of Chiang Mai. It's a large, spacious store, well set out and signed, with a vast amount of stock. The staff are as helpful as they can be, making the shopping experience smooth and enjoyable. Regular visitors have nothing but praise for the establishment, appreciating its cleanliness and the variety of items available.

However, it's worth noting that the Big C is more than just a supermarket. It's part of a larger shopping center, which also houses Homepro, a hardware homewares store, and about 100 small shops selling a variety of items. The main tenants are the old Carrefour, which is a department store and supermarket combined, and Homepro. The shopping center is not as upmarket or designer-oriented as Central Festival, but it offers a wide range of everyday items that cater to the needs of the average shopper.

Carrefour, for instance, has everything from mobile phones, TVs, washing machines, plastic containers, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, clothes and shoes, travel goods, health and beauty items, toys, and more. The supermarket section boasts a great meat selection, delicious baked goods, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables, dry goods, deli goods, dairy products including a lot of French imports, and a liquor department. Everything you would expect in a huge supermarket.

Homepro, on the other hand, offers a wide range of home improvement items. From rugs, light fittings, lamps, paint, bathroom fittings, shower screens and bases, garden equipment, washing machines, ovens, fridges, coffee machines, batteries, brushes, and more. It's a one-stop-shop for all your home needs.

The shopping center also has a large food hall with individual stalls, coffee shops, and small shops selling clothes, shoes, cameras, phones and accessories, assorted food items, and more. It's a great place to explore and see what everyday life is like for the Thai people.

Despite the size and variety of items available, some visitors have found the shopping center lacking in certain areas. For instance, if you're looking for a shirt, a pair of pants, or something for the house, you might be disappointed. Some have described the building as empty, with just some phone shops and the Big C supermarket.

However, for those staying nearby, such as across the river near Warorot market, the shopping center is a convenient place to meet all their shopping requirements. From bread, alcohol, bakery items, light bulbs, batteries, to mini deodorants, mini tiger balm, gifts for friends, and plastic containers, they can find it all here. The shopping center is worth at least one visit, especially if you're in the area.
