About Chao Praya River
The Chao Phraya River, the longest river in Thailand, is a lifeline for the locals, providing water for their daily needs and serving as a major transportation route. It winds its way through many states, offering a unique perspective of the country's landscape and lifestyle. However, it's worth noting that the river may not appear pristine, but its significance to the villagers is undeniable.A journey along the Chao Phraya River is a must-do when visiting Ayutthaya. The river offers a perfect vantage point to view many of the city's relics. There are numerous options available to suit any budget and time constraints, with or without meals included. If time permits, a late afternoon boat trip is recommended, allowing visitors to witness the temples in both sunlight and at sunset.
One popular way to explore the river is by booking a hop-on, hop-off boat for the day. This option, priced at around 140 or 150 BHT per person, allows visitors to tour different stops along the river. However, it's important to plan the day wisely as it might be challenging to cover five different stops in a day. One strategy could be to travel from the beginning of the boat dock to the terminus, then decide which stops to disembark at on the return journey.
Visitors should be aware that some stops, such as Wat Arun and Wat Pho, require a bit of extra planning. These temples require men to wear long pants and women to cover their knees and shoulders. Fortunately, there are plenty of stalls selling emergency rayon clothing for this purpose. This lightweight fabric is ideal for Thailand's heat and humidity and is easy to launder and dry.
A river cruise in the evening is another great way to experience the Chao Phraya River. Although it might be a bit pricier, the experience is well worth the cost. The cruise lasts about two hours, offering a delightful dinner buffet. The evening views are particularly enchanting, with the river's condition obscured by the darkness and the glimmering lights from the places along the river creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Each boat is wonderfully decorated with lights, adding to the overall ambiance.
However, not all experiences along the Chao Phraya River are positive. Some visitors have reported being misled into overpriced tours that did not meet their expectations. One such tour involved a tuk-tuk ride to a boat tour, which turned out to be a disappointing experience with sights of rubbish-filled areas and no stops at promised attractions. It's always advisable to research and negotiate prices before agreeing to any tours.
Despite some negative experiences, many visitors have found their journey along the Chao Phraya River to be a highlight of their trip. The river offers a unique perspective of Thailand, from its bustling cities to its serene temples. Whether it's a peaceful boat ride, a hop-on, hop-off tour, or a dinner cruise, a trip along the Chao Phraya River is sure to be a memorable experience.
