About Chao Sam Phraya National Museum

The museum, located in the heart of Ayudhaya, is a treasure trove of historical artifacts and cultural relics. It features a vast collection of gold jewelry, Buddha images, ancient paintings, and other objects that were unearthed during the restoration of the renowned Wat Ratchaburana. A visit to this museum is considered a must for anyone exploring Ayudhaya.

Recently, the museum has expanded with the opening of a new building, while the main museum building is undergoing renovation. The exhibits are divided into eight sections, each showcasing the exquisite gold treasures that were discovered in Wat Rajburana, Wat Phra Srisanpetch, and Wat Mahatat. Visitors not only gain a deeper understanding of Ayudhaya's rich history but also get to appreciate the artistic skills and craftsmanship of the people of Ayudhaya, as well as their devotion to Buddhism. The curator has done an excellent job in organizing and presenting these artifacts.

The museum has a strict pricing policy, which some visitors have suggested could be reviewed, especially for long-term Thai residents. Despite this, the museum is well laid out, with friendly and informative staff. They have also implemented a good COVID policy, ensuring the safety of all visitors.

The museum is a bit off the main loop of the Wats, but it's worth the extra walk, especially for those interested in the artwork that once adorned the royal Wats of Ratchaburana and Wat Mongkhon Bhopit. A gold hoard discovered during excavations is showcased in a special room, displaying the amazing U-Thong style. There are also Buddha statues of various sizes throughout the two-floor museum. After a day of exploring the large Wat structures, the museum offers a great appreciation for the details and history of Ayutthaya.

While some visitors may find the museum a bit pricey, it offers a unique opportunity to see artifacts found inside the temples. For those who want a better picture of the temples as they must have been hundreds of years ago, this museum is worth seeing.

The museum is well maintained, with a good amount of display items. However, some visitors have noted that there is a lack of English translations, which could enhance the understanding of the wats and the old city. The museum also seems to be a popular destination for school children, suggesting its role as an educational center. Despite some areas for improvement, the museum is considered a necessity for the old city of Ayutthaya.

The Chao Sam Phraya Museum, named after the third son of King Intharacha, is another must-see in Ayutthaya. The museum lets Ayutthaya's old stones tell their story, with the highlights being the two air-conditioned rooms exhibiting the treasures found at Wat Maha That and Wat Racha Burana. Despite some areas of the museum looking a bit outdated, it offers a unique insight into the city's rich history.

The National Museum consists of two main buildings and a few traditional style buildings in the center of Ayutthaya. It houses several large pieces, such as stone Buddhas and bronze pieces, outside the buildings. The most precious pieces are the ones recovered from a theft at Wat Ratchanburana and the excavations at neighboring Wat Maha That. While some visitors may find the museum less exciting than exploring the ruins, it is still worth a stop for those spending several days in the area.
