About Che Chin Khor Temple and Pagoda

Nestled on the riverside of Bangkok, a small Chinese temple stands as a beacon of tranquility amidst the bustling city. Unlike its more vibrant counterparts, this temple exudes a unique charm with its understated colors and interesting pagoda. It is a place of worship that offers religious services, and due to its somewhat hidden location, it is not often frequented by tourists, making it a peaceful retreat for those who manage to find it.

The journey to this temple is an adventure in itself. A narrow road, flanked by the city's hustle and bustle, leads to this serene sanctuary. Behind the current temple, a new building is under construction, adding to the intriguing blend of old and new. From the top level of the temple, one can enjoy a picturesque view of the surrounding scenery.

The temple is part of the Chee Chin Khor foundation, a charitable organization that has been supporting the less fortunate since 1952. The property boasts a beautiful temple and a pagoda, which visitors are encouraged to climb. The reward for this effort is a breathtaking view of the river and the city of Bangkok on the opposite bank. This sight alone makes the visit to the temple worthwhile.

Despite its central location opposite Chinatown, this temple remains a hidden gem. The best way to reach it is by taking the Sawatdi ferry in Chinatown and walking about 300 meters once you arrive on the other side of the river. The temple is an intriguing mix of Chinese and Thai architecture, featuring a seven-story pagoda that offers a panoramic view of the river and the Wang Lee family mansion.

The Chee Chin Khor temple and pagoda, although recently built, are designed in an exuberant and traditional style. The temple is adorned with intricate details, and visitors can walk up to the top of the pagoda to enjoy a stunning view of the river and the rooftops of surrounding temples. The surrounding area, Khlong San, is somewhat forgotten, offering a glimpse into traditional Thonburi life. Here, you won't find many tourists, but you will discover several other temples.

If you find yourself in the area, be sure to visit the jam factory and Candide/Library for a cup of tea or coffee. During a visit, you might find yourself as the only person at some of the nearby Thai temples, providing a unique opportunity to interact with the local monks. A leisurely walk around the backstreets will reveal a plethora of traditional Thai and Chinese houses, adding to the authentic cultural experience.
