About Chiang Dao Cave
The allure of a cave is undeniable, and this particular one is no exception. It's a large cave system, filled with numerous caverns, each one more fascinating than the last. The stalagmites and stalactites that adorn the cave are a sight to behold, with many of them resembling animals. The guides are always eager to point out these unique formations. The cave is also home to various shrines and buddhas, including one dedicated to a hermit who once lived inside the cave. The initial entry into the cave can be a bit challenging, requiring some to crawl through a small hole. However, once inside, the cave is very accessible. The guides ensure that all visitors follow the same route, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.Chiang Dao is not just about the caves, though. The area offers a plethora of activities for visitors to enjoy. There are two different hot springs, a beautiful temple that can be reached by hiking, a larger hike up a limestone mountain, a Tuesday market, an animal sanctuary, and scenic roads perfect for getting lost on.
A day trip from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao is highly recommended. The cave is a must-visit, and contrary to some concerns, it is not a tourist trap. The guides are volunteers who take pride in showcasing this beautiful monument. The cave is uniquely beautiful and interesting, with visitors winding their way through caverns by gas lamp, seeing Buddhist shrines, natural limestone features, and bat colonies. There are a few small areas that require some clambering, which adds to the fun, although it could be challenging for some.
Tham Chiang Dao, one of Northern Thailand’s best-known cave temples, has been a meditation retreat since the 1760s. However, some visitors feel that it is only worth a visit if you're already in the area. The temple may appear run-down to some, and the stalactites and stalactites may not impress everyone, especially those who have visited larger caverns in other parts of Thailand.
Visiting the caves is definitely recommended when in the Chiang Dao area. While guides and lanterns are offered, some visitors feel they are unnecessary as the paths are well lit and well signposted, and can easily be navigated alone.
The cave is larger than others in Thailand, but it is very developed and may not provide a true sense of adventure for some. If you do visit, it is recommended to take the guide and go through the entire cave open to visitors. However, if you are claustrophobic or uncomfortable bending or climbing steep steps, it might be best to stay on the lit path.
Visiting the cave late in the day can be a unique experience. One visitor recounts hiring a lady guide who spoke minimal English but was extremely friendly and pointed out the highlights of the cave. The guide's dog followed them around, navigating the cave with ease and adding a touch of charm to the experience.
In conclusion, the cave in Chiang Dao offers a unique and memorable experience for visitors. Whether you're exploring the caverns, admiring the stalagmites and stalactites, or simply enjoying the serene atmosphere, it's an adventure that's worth embarking on.
