About Chiang mai home host

Embarking on a journey south from Chiang Mai, travelers find themselves in the quaint district of Hangdong, specifically in the village of Bandoo. Here, they are welcomed into the home of the Raunkaew-Yanon family, a lineage that traces its roots back almost 150 years, possibly arriving in the area on elephant back. The family is of Lanna descent, maintaining the traditions of their ancestors, including the construction of their homes from teak wood.

The experience begins with a warm welcome from the host, Mr. Pat, and his family. Visitors are treated to an insightful introduction into Lanna culture, history, and the family's journey through time. The day is filled with hands-on experiences, as guests are encouraged to join in and sample some of the exotic flavors of the past and present. The family's hospitality shines through as they guide visitors in cooking an authentic meal together.

The experience is enriched by the sharing of family history and traditions. The highlight for many is the opportunity to cook traditional dishes using vegetables and fruits grown on the family's own land. The preparation of banana leaves by a family elder is a particularly memorable moment.

The Raunkaew Yanon family offers more than just a cooking class. The morning is spent learning about the family's heritage, exploring the gardens, and discovering a vast array of plants, herbs, and spices all grown in their backyard. The day culminates in a fun-filled cooking session, where a feast of dishes is prepared and shared as a family.

Mr. Raunkaew, the charismatic host, provides an authentic introduction to the rich Thai culture, including Buddhism, Spiritualism, and Feng Shui. His home and expansive garden, located on the rural outskirts of Chiang Mai, serve as the backdrop for this immersive experience. Visitors are introduced to the family's spirit house, home, and ancestors, and are treated to a cocktail of herbs used by the older generation to start their day.

The experience is suitable for all, from large groups to families and couples. It is a unique opportunity to explore a traditional Thai home and farm, and to cook alongside the welcoming family. The evening concludes with the preparation and cooking of six dishes, with the family accommodating various dietary restrictions.

The Raunkaew-Yanon family's generosity and genuine hospitality leave a lasting impression on visitors. The authenticity of their offering, with four generations involved in cooking, is a testament to their commitment to preserving their traditions. This experience is often cited as one of the best things to do in Thailand, with the delicious food and the family's generosity being unforgettable highlights.
