About Chiangmai Elephant Land
The Elephant Land experience is a unique and immersive journey that allows visitors to interact with elephants in their natural habitat. This is not your typical tourist attraction, but rather a sanctuary where the well-being of the elephants is the top priority. The elephants are not forced to perform or entertain, but are allowed to roam freely and engage in their natural behaviors. Visitors are given the opportunity to observe and participate in the elephants' daily routines, such as feeding, bathing, and walking through the jungle. The experience is guided by a knowledgeable tour guide, known as Superboy, who is passionate about elephants and their welfare. He provides a wealth of information about the elephants, their needs, and the challenges faced by the local community in caring for these magnificent creatures. Superboy's enthusiasm and love for the elephants is infectious, making the experience all the more enjoyable and educational.
The day begins with a drive from Chiang Mai to the sanctuary, during which Superboy shares insights about the local village and the elephant tourism industry. Upon arrival, visitors are given local clothes to wear, signaling to the elephants that they are there to provide food. The elephants, all female and part of one family, are then introduced and the feeding begins. The elephants consume a staggering 200 kilos of food each day, including bananas, watermelon, and grass.
After feeding, visitors accompany the elephants on a walk through the jungle, moving at the elephants' pace and stopping when they stop. This leisurely stroll provides ample opportunities to observe the elephants in their natural environment and to learn more about their behaviors and habits. The walk is followed by a mud bath, which is beneficial for the elephants' skin, and a rinse under a waterfall.
In addition to feeding and bathing, visitors also have the chance to prepare medicine for the elephants using roots and plants collected during the walk. This hands-on activity further enhances the immersive nature of the experience and provides a deeper understanding of the care and attention given to the elephants' health and well-being.
The Elephant Land experience is not just about the elephants, but also about the people who care for them. The staff, all native Karen people, are friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall warmth and authenticity of the experience. The sanctuary is located within a National Park, providing a stunning backdrop for this unforgettable adventure.
The day concludes with a return drive to Chiang Mai, leaving visitors with a wealth of memories and a newfound appreciation for elephants and the people who dedicate their lives to their care. The Elephant Land experience is highly recommended for anyone seeking an up-close and personal encounter with elephants in a respectful and ethical setting.
