About Doi Tung

The Mae Fah Luang Garden is a floral paradise, designed according to the wishes of the mother of King Rama 9. The entrance fee is a modest 90 THB, with discounts available for seniors. This garden is a delight for those who appreciate floriculture, and it holds its own when compared to the gardens in Europe and Dubai, albeit on a smaller scale. For seniors, hiring a golf cart is recommended due to the garden's inclines.

Before embarking on a visit to the Royal Villa and Gardens, one can explore the tribal market located on the left. Although the products across the stalls are similar, it's an interesting place to stroll around. The tea and pickle stall is a particular highlight, offering a variety of pickles and dried fruits to sample.

The garden is a beautiful sight, especially on a sunny day when the multi-colored flowers and outstanding garden art facilities truly shine. The tranquility of the place makes it a romantic spot, and the numerous sculptures, including fountains, add to its charm.

The peak of Doi Tung mountain, standing at 1400m, offers breathtaking views of Myanmar. The trenches left from the drug wars and smuggling activities of the 1990s serve as stark reminders of the area's past. The road to the top is not accessible for tourist buses or minivans, making it a less frequented spot. However, those with a car can navigate the drive, despite a few hazards. Military checkpoints along the way ensure safety, making it an interesting and worthwhile journey.

The hilltop offers an impressive view of a limestone outcrop dominating the Mekong flood plains near Mai Sai. On a clear day, one can see Myanmar and the lowlands of Thailand. Once an opium production area, it has now transformed into a hub of rural developments. The Doi Tung Royal Villa, a summer residence for the late mother of the king, is a must-visit, with its attractive flower gardens and restaurants.

The Hall of Inspiration offers a deep dive into the history of the Thai royal family. The museum is well-curated, with interesting displays that provide a wealth of information. The Doi Tung project, initiated by the royal family, is an inspiring endeavor. The gardens are beautiful throughout the year, and the Royal Villa, though understated, is quite interesting. It offers a glimpse into the life of the mother of the current king and her contributions to Doi Tung.

The Doi Tung Development Project in Mae Sai is another testament to the royal family's commitment to the welfare of the local people. The project, initiated by the princess, aimed to empower locals to become economically self-reliant. It offers vocational training in various fields, including coffee and macadamia nut production, ceramics, paper making, and carpet weaving. Visitors can observe the spinning of silk thread, the weaving of silk fabric, and the process of making Doi Tung hand fans. Each specialty is housed under its own roof, making for a lot of walking, but it's a small price to pay for such an enriching experience. The project is located a few miles down the mountain from Mae Fah Luang Gardens.
