About Indochina Market
The market in question is a typical Thai market, with a variety of booths selling a range of items. However, it seems to lack the unique charm that one might expect from a market in such a culturally rich region. Many of the booths were closed, possibly due to the pandemic, and the offerings were rather mundane, with household items, clothes, and the like. There was a noticeable absence of street food or any other highlights that would make the market stand out. The market seemed to lack any distinct Indo-Chinese elements that would set it apart. Interestingly, there is another market in Mukdahan that is said to be far superior and worth a visit. The area surrounding the market is currently undergoing construction to repair damage from flooding. This has resulted in many shops having to sell their merchandise on the pavement, causing inconvenience for shoppers and pedestrians alike. The range of merchandise available is vast, from snacks, preserved fruits, dried fish, clothing, household gadgets, tools, knick-knacks, and more. However, the quality and freshness of these items are questionable, with many of them imported from China or Vietnam. Some items are locally made, particularly clothing. It is advisable to have some knowledge about the items you intend to buy, to ensure you get good quality and a fair price. Bargaining is a common practice in this market.
Despite its shortcomings, the market is worth a visit if you're in the area. Mukdahan is a blend of traditional Thai and Lao influences, and the market reflects this. The market is a single street filled with shops and booths, with some offshoots. The vendors are friendly and not overly pushy, allowing you to browse at your leisure. While a lot of the merchandise is cheap and of questionable quality, there are some decent items to be found. The market is similar to Camden Market, with a variety of items you never knew you wanted.
The market is primarily oriented towards Thai and Asian customers, with little consideration for foreign visitors. However, it can still be an interesting experience for all. There are a few booths selling souvenirs similar to those found in Bangkok, but not many. Most of the items are cheap imports for the house, with a heavy emphasis on dried foods and clothing. There are also a couple of jewelry stores selling nice silver and gold items. There are temples on both the north and south sides of the market that you can freely stroll through, showing respect and a nice smile that's likely to be returned.
The market is mainly undercover and easy to navigate. The prices are very good, with a wide range of clothes and local crafts and materials available. The location of the market, beside the river, is a major draw. The promenade, food stalls, and restaurants in the area, and the general hubbub of activity is infectious. Just sitting on one of the seats by the river under the shade of the trees and watching what is going on around is worth it. The market closes down and all activity disappears quite early in the evening, which can be surprising.
