About Khao Nam Khang Historic Tunnel

The journey to the Khao Nam Khang Tunnel Complex is an adventure in itself. The road leading there meanders through rubber plantations and quaint villages, with very minimal traffic. For those coming from Malaysia, it's recommended to use the Kota Putera checkpoint, as the traffic flow could be lighter than using the Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint. Along the way, one could stop by a forest reserve waterfall, a clear cooling mountain stream that's perfect for a quick dip if it's not raining. If you're heading to Dannok, consider stopping by The Good View Restaurant by the lake for a meal.

The Khao Nam Khang Tunnel Complex is located inside the Khao Nam Khang National Park. These tunnels, built in the 1970s, served as a hideout for armed members of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) until the conclusion of the 1989 peace agreement. They were transformed into a tourist attraction in 1997 by a former member of the CPM. After viewing the video presentation and the small museum, visitors can explore the tunnels as well as the various structures in the open. There is a small restaurant as well as clean toilets on site.

History enthusiasts will find the tunnel complex particularly fascinating. It is less developed and not as well maintained compared to the Piyamit Tunnels near Betong. This tunnel complex was used by troops of the Communist Party of Malaya in their fight against their government in the 1970s and 80s. The setting is really beautiful. It was quite a drive to get there (especially if coming from Betong) but worth it.

The tunnels are somewhat similar but much less extensive than those found in Betong, located in South Eastern Thailand. This often overlooked conflict is a very interesting chapter describing the Malaysian, Thai and British relationship about 65 years ago. However, the displays are sadly lacking in English Language descriptions, which might make it difficult for non-Thai visitors to fully understand the historical context.

Non-Thai visitors should be aware that they will be charged 150 baht instead of the 40 baht that locals pay. As you walk into the tunnel, you will see many photos, but not many descriptions, so you really have to do a lot of guess work to get the big picture. The site isn't preserved historically accurate, many modifications which were not used back in the day are quite obvious. The weapons and other daily equipment used by the communist guerrillas are scattered with little care and no info.

The place is far from Songkhla city and slightly run down on their facilities. However, it is indeed an educational trip and visitors can learn a lot from one of the members who tells vividly how he spent his time fighting in the past. It's not recommended for kids and old people as you need to climb the stairs down which the steps are fairly high in the tunnel.

Despite its shortcomings, the Khao Nam Khang Tunnel Complex is an amazing place to visit. The creative room in the cave for the soldier in the past is particularly surprising. It's a place that offers a unique glimpse into a significant part of Asian history, making it a must-visit for history buffs and those interested in the region's past.
