About Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

The Phanom Nature Reserve and Waterfall is a serene escape from the bustling city life of Bangkok and Krabi. The reserve is a haven for nature lovers, offering a tranquil setting with lush trees, a small river, and a series of small waterfalls that are a sight to behold. The waterfalls are located about 500m from the car park, and reaching them requires a bit of a climb over some boulders, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The reserve is teeming with beautiful butterflies and birds, making it feel like a jungle adventure. There are well-maintained paths and plenty of places to sit, eat, and drink, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. The reserve also has facilities like toilets and a cafe, adding to the convenience of visitors.

However, the reserve has been criticized for its elephant trekking activity. Visitors have reported seeing elephants being made to give rides to tourists, with metal seats strapped onto their backs. The elephants are also chained and controlled with a sickle, which is used to instill fear in them. The elephants often look sad and lifeless, and some even have visible injuries. There are also elephant shows where baby elephants are made to perform tricks, which many visitors find distressing. It's important for potential visitors to be aware of these practices and consider whether they want to support them.

Despite these concerns, the reserve offers other activities that are worth exploring. The Huai To waterfall is a popular spot where visitors can take a refreshing dip in the pool. There's also the Dog Slide nature trail, which offers a challenging but rewarding trek through the forest. However, this trail is steep and can be difficult, so it's recommended for those who are reasonably fit and agile. The trail leads to the top of the waterfall, where visitors can take another dip in the pools.

Some visitors have had positive experiences with the elephant trekking and bathing tour offered by Huay Tho Waterfall Safari. The tour includes a trek through the jungle and streams, and the elephants are reportedly treated well. The mahouts guide the elephants gently with their voice and by nudging the back of their ears, and the elephants are allowed to stop and snack on nearby plants, drink water, and rest along the way. After the trek, visitors can reward the elephants with bananas and take photos with them. The tour also includes an opportunity to scrub down the elephants in a nearby bathing area.

The National Park, located 21km from Krabi, is another attraction worth visiting. The park headquarters, with its manicured lawns, resembles a botanical garden. There's a well-maintained path with concrete steps leading to the waterfalls. However, visitors are advised against taking the '2km Nature Walk', an alternative route to the falls. The trail is steep and not well-maintained, and it can be easy to get lost. It's recommended to have serious hiking boots, plenty of water, energy sources, and above-average fitness if you decide to take this trail.

In conclusion, the Phanom Nature Reserve and Waterfall offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, with its lush greenery, beautiful waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. However, potential visitors should be aware of the concerns surrounding the elephant trekking activity and make informed decisions. There are plenty of other activities to enjoy at the reserve, from swimming in the waterfall pools to trekking through the forest, making it a worthwhile destination for those seeking an adventure in nature.
