About Khao Tang Kuan

Songkhla, a hidden gem in Thailand, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural richness. One of the must-visit places in Songkhla is a historical site perched atop Khao Tang Kuan mountain. Despite some maintenance issues, the site's charm and allure remain undiminished. The site's management has been urged to renovate and upgrade the facilities, including the non-functional toilets, to enhance the visitor experience.

The journey to the top of Khao Tang Kuan mountain can be an adventure in itself. Visitors have the option to either walk up the old stairs, take a scenic path, or ride a lift. The lift ride is a popular choice as it offers a panoramic view of the city. Once at the top, the breath-taking view of the surrounding ocean, lake, and mountains is a sight to behold. The city of Songkhla, with its unique blend of urban and natural landscapes, looks particularly stunning from this vantage point.

The historical site on Khao Tang Kuan mountain is not just about the views. It is also home to a temple, a lighthouse built in 1896, and a gift shop selling well-priced items. The temple, though small, is worth a visit. Visitors can also ring the temple bells for good luck or pose by the brass prayer bell collection and the bell heart frames. The lighthouse, with its old-world charm, adds to the site's historical appeal.

Another unique feature of this site is the presence of long-tailed Macaques. These monkeys, which come out of the jungle, are a big hit with visitors. Locals often buy fruit from vendors to feed them, adding to the site's charm. The site is also known as 'Monkey Mountain' by English-speaking locals and expats.

The site also offers beautiful views in all directions of the Gulf of Thailand and Songkhla Lake. Visitors can see the Sala Vihan Daeng, a royal pavilion built during the reign of King Rama V, and the Dvaravati chedi tower, which houses Buddha relics. To the north/west, one can see Samila Beach, with its many vendor stands.

For those who prefer a more active visit, there is the option to walk up some steps on the opposite side of the hill. This path goes through some jungle and past some ruins of other temples. This walk can take at least half an hour each way and can be very hot, so it's advisable to carry water. From the top, visitors can take nice photos of Songkhla and the surrounding countryside, including the range of hills on the way to Hatyai. For a more gentle exercise, visitors can take the railway up and come down by the steps. However, it's recommended to have a map of Songkhla to navigate the area when coming down as it will be on the opposite side of the hill.

Despite its off-the-beaten-path location, Songkhla and its historical site on Khao Tang Kuan mountain offer a unique and memorable experience. Whether it's the stunning views, the historical significance, the cultural richness, or the chance to interact with monkeys, there's something for everyone in this hidden gem of Thailand.
