About Khum Chao Luang
The city of Phrae, nestled in the heart of Thailand, is home to a remarkable piece of history. A must-visit destination, the city boasts a two-storey gingerbread-style vintage building that was once the residence of the last lord of Phrae. This luxurious edifice, with its gracefully light green engraved wooden doors, windows, and eaves, stands as a testament to the grandeur of a bygone era.The building is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a treasure trove of history. Visitors can stroll around the premises, taking in the beauty of the architecture, capturing stunning photographs, and learning about the rich history of Phrae. The building houses a collection of antique furniture that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the past. The entrance to this historical marvel is free, making it an irresistible attraction for history buffs and casual tourists alike.
Adding a touch of intrigue to the place is an old dark dungeon that was once used to imprison slaves. This chilling reminder of the past adds a layer of depth to the historical narrative of the place, making the visit all the more memorable.
The building also offers a fascinating insight into the political tensions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It tells the tale of the flight of the Prince into exile in Laos and the tensions between Siam, the French, and the British. This historical narrative adds a layer of intrigue to the visit, making it a truly immersive experience.
The residence of the last rulers of Phrae before the area became fully incorporated into the Kingdom of Siam, the building showcases architecture and household items typical of the late 1800s. Among the exhibits, visitors can find almost medieval torture contraptions on display in the basement, adding a touch of the macabre to the historical narrative.
The building is set in attractive grounds and is beautifully preserved. Inside, there are plenty of well-labelled exhibits to see. The charming ambiance of the place is further enhanced by the fact that entry is free.
The building is particularly beautiful in the early morning when the sunlight paints the facade in warm soft tones. With its beautiful architecture and interesting antiques, it makes for a good visit in the early morning.
Despite its historical significance, some may find the building to be just an old house. It was the residence of the Luang, an administrator named by the king. However, the beauty of the architecture and the historical narrative it tells make it a worthwhile visit.
This old-style mansion is a hidden gem in the city center. It's surprising how few people visit it. The house is very nice, and the inside is fantastic. It has a lot of rooms filled with old-style furniture. The descriptions are in both Thai and English, and there are a lot of old photos that are very nice. It's the number one attraction in the city center, and there's no entrance fee. Don't miss it!
