About Koh Chang Thai Navy Shrine
The location in question is a monument, constructed in the best traditions of Thai white elephants, that could have been an interesting and educational site. However, it has been described as a disappointing, dilapidated structure that seems to lack maintenance or any attempt to make it appealing to visitors. The building, intriguingly shaped like a ship, is an empty shell that visitors apparently don't have access to.The monument is situated at the southern end of an island on the eastern side, making it a long journey for those who wish to visit. Outside the building, there is a small monument dedicated to the victims of the Ko Chang naval battle. However, it is poorly maintained and lacks educational signs in English, making it difficult for non-Thai speakers to understand its significance.
The surrounding area includes a small beach, which is mainly used by local picnickers. Unfortunately, it has been reported that there was a significant amount of trash strewn around during a visit. The beach also had a surprisingly large number of dead fish, which could be off-putting for potential visitors.
Despite these drawbacks, some visitors have found the monument worth a visit. The monument is a fairly new structure built to resemble a warship. It was erected to honor those who died in the hard-fought battle between French invaders and Thai naval ships in 1941. The beach nearby is described as very nice, with trees filled with small sea shells and other items to honor the dead sailors.
The monument also offers a beautiful view of the sunset, making it a picturesque spot for those who appreciate natural beauty. It has even attracted visitors from as far as Bangkok, who have camped there to enjoy the serene environment.
The monument is also a tribute to a Thai Admiral who played a significant role in founding the modern-day Royal Thai Navy. It commemorates a famous Thai naval victory over the potential colonist forces of France, making it an interesting piece of Thai naval history. The climb up the steps to the monument is said to be well worth the view from the top. For those who prefer not to climb, there is a roadway up, providing an alternative for those on wheels.
In conclusion, while the monument has its drawbacks, including a lack of maintenance and educational information, it also offers a unique piece of Thai naval history, a beautiful beach, and a stunning view of the sunset. It may be a long journey to get there, but for some, it could be a worthwhile visit.
