About Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan Snorkeling Tour
The Japanese Gardens at Koh Bang Yuang offer a fantastic snorkelling experience. The visibility is good, and the stunning coral and fish make for a memorable underwater adventure. The location is not as crowded as one might expect, making it a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. The Japanese Gardens are a sight to behold, with their beauty leaving many wishing they had more time to explore. The seaward side of the sand bank is not as vibrant, but the pier side offers a decent snorkelling experience, although not as impressive as the gardens. The trip is definitely worth it for the snorkelling alone. However, the experience can be marred by the effects of mass tourism. The private resort of Koh Nang Yuan, for instance, has been heavily impacted by the influx of tourists, particularly from China. The island has become a tourist money grab, with deck chairs and umbrellas covering the once pristine white sand. The snorkelling area is often crowded, with many tourists bobbing around in their life jackets close to the shore. The coral close to the shore has suffered, with much of it dead and bleached due to constant trampling. Despite these challenges, confident swimmers can still find peace by swimming out as far as possible to the boundary. The lunch provided is average, and the experience can feel rushed and impersonal. A visit to Koh Tao offers a better experience, with fewer boats and more space to explore. The snorkelling here is enjoyable, with plenty of fish and coral to see.
Despite the beauty of the locations, some visitors have expressed disappointment with the overall experience. The vibrant coral and variety of fish that were once the main attractions seem to have diminished, likely due to the impact of tourism. The boat rides can be smooth, but the breakfast provided is often lacklustre. The lunch is decent but not spectacular. The snorkelling spots are small and roped off, limiting the area for exploration. While it's still possible to have fun, the experience falls short of being one of the top snorkelling points in the world.
Safety concerns have also been raised about the tours. Boats can be overcrowded, with more passengers than initially promised. Safety instructions are often not provided, and life jackets are not always required, raising questions about the adequacy of safety measures. The weather can worsen as the day goes on, leading to uncomfortable and potentially dangerous conditions. Communication equipment seems to be lacking, and the cleanliness of the boats leaves much to be desired. The lack of English-speaking crew members can also be a problem for non-Thai speaking tourists.
For experienced snorkellers, the experience can be underwhelming. The long boat ride to an overcrowded beach, the lack of fins, and the small patch of coral for snorkelling can be disappointing. The presence of many non-swimmers wearing life jackets can also detract from the experience. The boardwalk over some rocks can be unsafe, and the need to pay for beach chairs and the prohibition of water bottles on the beach can be inconvenient. The second snorkelling spot off Koh Toa is better, but still not up to the standards of experienced snorkellers.
The long, back-breaking speed boat ride to the snorkelling spots can be exhausting and not worth the time and money for some. The clear water, corals, and small fishes may not be enough to justify the long journey. Some would rather spend their time and money enjoying the southern part of the Chaweng beach. The exhausting boat ride can even affect plans for the rest of the day. Unless one is planning to stay for a couple of days for scuba diving, this day trip may not be recommended.
