About Lamtakhong Dam
This place is a dam, a simple yet captivating sight to behold. It's a nice spot to take a break, perhaps during a long drive, or for a quick visit. While it may not be overflowing with amenities, it offers a serene environment to stop, relax, and take in the beautiful sights around. The dam is not just a sightseeing spot, but also a place for some fun and adventure. If you're planning a trip here, remember to pack your swimsuit. The dam is home to a multitude of turtles, especially towards the end of the dam where the outlet is placed. However, caution is advised during periods of low water level due to the presence of large stones under the water surface. Head jumps are not recommended for safety reasons.
This dam is one of the largest and most beautiful dams in Thailand. It offers a perfect scenic view, especially during the journey to the Northeast of Thailand. The dam is a significant landmark on the Friendship Highway or Mattraparp Road, heading towards Nakhon Ratchasima. On the left, you can see a large body of water, which is the dam. The lake provides water to Korat, located forty odd kilometers away.
Along the highway, there are several small eateries specializing in barbeque fish and chicken, making for a welcome stop. There is also a memorial to the late Prime Minister of Thailand, who was responsible for much of the infrastructure developments in Esarn, including the multi-lane highway. A statue of him can be found near the tourist office, beside his beloved motorcycle. There are also many so-called resorts nearby.
The dam wall itself can be visited. There is a small village nearby and a playground for little children. However, the area is currently quite green and overgrown. Despite this, it's a good spot for a quick photo before continuing your journey.
The dam is also a great place to have lunch and enjoy the view. The landscape is truly breathtaking, with several small restaurants offering excellent views. It's the biggest reservoir some visitors have ever encountered.
It's a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Whether you're there for a few hours or a whole day, it's a peaceful place to enjoy the lake, have a meal, and relax. It's an easy drive from most places in Bangkok, and once you're there, you'll feel like you're out in the countryside.
On an EastNorth (ESAN) adventure, the first stop after entering Nakhon Ratchsima should be Pak Chong, Kao Yai, The Palio, and Primo Cafe. However, these can also be visited on your way back. After a two-hour drive from town, the rest area by the reservoir is most relaxing. The Service Area is a Royal Project located at the far end of the reservoir. If you're hungry and would like to try some typical Hot and Spicy ESAN cuisine, there are several options along the way before reaching the Rest Area. Take a breath of fresh air before hitting the road for Korat Down Town, another 50-minute drive away.
