About Mae Hong Son Mountain Wat

Perched atop a mountain overlooking the town of Mae Hong Son, a beautiful Wat, known as Wat Phra Tat Doi Kong Moo, offers breathtaking views and countless photo opportunities. The journey to the top can be quite steep, but visitors have the option to either walk or drive. The choice is yours, but either way, the reward at the top is well worth the effort.

The Wat is best visited in the morning when the heat is less intense. The panoramic views over the area are simply stunning, and the temple itself is a sight to behold.

Wat Phra Tat Doi Kong Moo is a revered temple for the residents of Mae Hong Son. Built in a mixed Shan Thai style in 1860, the temple features two pagodas. The first was constructed by a high-ranking Shan merchant, and the second, smaller one was added by the governor of Mae Hong Son province some 14 years later. The temple's name, Kong Moo, translates to Pagoda.

At an elevation of 1,300 meters, the temple offers a bird's eye view of the entire town, including the airport and runway. The scenery is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. The temple is just 3 kilometers from the town center, with a 1.5 km winding road leading up to the top. For those who prefer a more challenging route, there are 300 steps at the foot of the mountain that lead up to the temple.

There is a shop in the area where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee and some refreshments while taking in the view from the patio. The temple can get quite crowded during the New Year festival, Song Kran festival, and important Buddhist religious ceremony days. So, if you're interested in experiencing the culture or prefer a quieter visit, it's a good idea to check the calendar for each event.

The journey to the top can be quite a challenge, especially if you're racing against the sunset. But once you reach the top, the view is simply indescribable.

For those who love nature, a trip from Mae Hong Son via Maesariang to Mae Sot is a must. This northwesterly route in Thailand takes you through virgin forests and untouched territories. The road is reminiscent of the Mae Hong Son Ring Road, with its mountainous terrain, hundreds of hairpins, and steep inclines. The road has been recently sealed and tarred, allowing travelers to focus more on the beauty of nature.

The road to the temple is not far from the predominant lake area and involves a steep climb to the top of the mountain. The Wat is indeed a sight to behold, but the mountain location offers the best aerial views of the Mae Hong Son city area.

The temple offers a peaceful place to visit, meditate, and enjoy the breeze. The view over the city and the airport runway is quite a sight. Whether you're a nature lover, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking for a serene place to unwind, Wat Phra Tat Doi Kong Moo in Mae Hong Son is a destination worth visiting.
