About Mai Khao Plaza
Maikhao zone is a bustling area that offers a variety of amenities including shopping, local food, seafood, spas, fast food, and pharmacies. However, the once vibrant Mai Khoa Plaza has seen a decline in its popularity due to the competition from the nearby Turtle Village shopping area. The plaza could benefit from a few improvements such as adding shady benches for visitor seating, playing some music, and investing in evening entertainment. Currently, the plaza is not very visitor-friendly and the only reason to visit is for money exchange. This is unfortunate for the current shop owners who are struggling to attract customers.Nearby, there is a small shopping center located close to the Marriott hotels. Although it's quite small with limited shops, it's ideal for groceries, picking up some souvenirs, or trying different food than what's offered at the hotel. There is a free shuttle from Renaissance to the shopping center every hour, providing a nice change of scenery for visitors.
The area offers a few other options for visitors. There are a couple of souvenir shops, a mart, a local fruit stall, and a seafood restaurant. In the evenings, elephants are brought in and visitors can feed them for 100 baht a plate. However, this practice has been criticized by some visitors who feel that the elephants are being exploited. They are kept out for hours in the shopping center at night, earning baht. Some visitors have expressed their disapproval of this practice and have urged others not to support it.
One of the highlights of the Maikhao zone is the Living Room restaurant at Mai Khao Plaza. This restaurant is an excellent place for local Thai food. The steamed fish is very fresh and cooked to perfection. The live entertainment is great and the staff are very friendly. This restaurant is a great place to enjoy a lovely local dinner.
Despite its shortcomings, the Maikhao zone offers some distraction from resort life. The restaurant food is good, but slightly overpriced, being just about 5% cheaper than the nearby hotels. Shopping-wise, there’s little attractive, unless you want to buy some knick-knacks, wine, or food. Overall, while the Maikhao zone has its charms, it also has areas that could use improvement to enhance the visitor experience.
