The islands near Phuket and Khaolak are a true taste of paradise, offering some of the best snorkelling experiences. The reefs are vibrant and teeming with a variety of fish, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a turtle. The clear turquoise waters are a sight to behold, making it a must-visit spot for snorkelling enthusiasts. However, it's important to note that these islands are only open for visits from October to May.

The islands are located in a military territory, which means the accommodation options are limited to tents or guesthouses. While the tent accommodation might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's a unique experience for those who enjoy camping. However, it's worth noting that alcohol is not allowed on the islands, and the nearest restaurant is 16km away on the mainland.

Despite its beauty, the islands have their share of issues. The entrance fee is quite steep, and the food and drinks are triple the price compared to other parts of Thailand. The beaches are often littered with plastic, and unfortunately, the staff of the National Park doesn't seem to do much about it. There are also several fishermen boats close to the beach, which should ideally be forbidden in a national park.

The islands are a bit of a distance from Phuket, requiring a 1.5-hour drive and another 2 hours by boat. However, the islands are less crowded and offer a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle. There's a gipsy camp on the islands, which could do with a bit of cleaning up.

Visiting Mu Ko Surin is like embarking on a camping trip. The bungalows available are basic and not very glamorous, but if you enjoy camping, swimming, and snorkelling, you're in for a treat. The park offers services like tent rentals and meal options, which are quite affordable. However, the park uses a quirky coupon system for purchasing meals, which might seem odd but is easy enough to navigate.

The staff at the park speak very little English, so communication might be a bit of a challenge. However, they understand their services well, so a smile, politeness, and pointing at signs should get you what you need. The park also organizes longtail boats out to the reef for snorkelling twice a day, which is an experience not to be missed.

Surin Islands are a snorkelling paradise. The coral reefs are mostly in shallow water, making it perfect for snorkelling. Despite some damage due to coral bleaching, the corals seem to be recovering well. The islands are relatively undeveloped, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in nature. However, it's important to bring mosquito repellent products as big mosquitos and insects are part of being this close to nature.

Getting to Surin Islands can be a challenge. First, you have to go to Kuraburi and then go to Surin Islands via a speedboat operated by one of the private tour operators. The accommodation on the island is very basic, with options of a bungalow or a tent. The food is provided by the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, and while the price is higher than usual, it's understandable as the food has to be transported from the shore to the island.

The islands are a gorgeous place to rough it in a tent and snorkel off the beach or from a boat. The islands cater mostly to Thai tourists, so the weekends might be a bit crowded. However, during the day, the beach is quiet as most tourists go for their snorkel tours. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature, but it's important to bring enough sunscreen, books to read, and be prepared to rough it.
