About Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca)

MOCA BANGKOK is a purpose-built art sanctuary, designed to showcase an exceptional collection of art amassed over three decades by Boonchai Bencharongkul, a man whose passion for art is profound. The museum serves as a tangible token of gratitude for the many blessings bestowed upon the Thai people by their beloved monarch, King Rama IX. It is also dedicated to the honour of Professor Silpa Bhirasri, known as the “Father of Contemporary Art” in Thailand.

The museum displays a diverse range of art, with pieces inspired by traditional Thai modes of expression, as well as those influenced by the introduction of Western artistic styles and techniques. Approximately 800 works selected from Boonchai Bencharongkul’s private collection are exhibited in the 20,000 square metres of well-lit white space. These artworks stand as a testament to Thai creativity, beliefs, and thought processes. They also represent a large quantity of what can be considered the best works of Thai art.

The museum is also known for its street art and Russian posters, drawing comparisons to the works of the renowned artist Banksy. However, it's worth noting that the museum is not included in the Munich card, and the entrance fee of 9E may seem steep for some.

Each floor of the museum offers a unique experience, with different arts from various artists. The art often feels more related to religion and beliefs, providing a deep insight into Thai culture. The museum is beautifully organized, with a huge collection of displays. It has been described as a world-class art gallery, beautiful and inspiring. The artwork is intelligently curated and laid out, making it one of the best experiences in Bangkok, Thailand, or anywhere in the world.

However, the museum has been noted for its obsession with depictions of naked women. Approximately half of the motifs of the paintings show nudes, indicating the founder and owner's preference for such art. Some visitors may find this aspect of the museum a bit kitschy. Most of the paintings have been produced recently for the collection, primarily in the 2020s. Despite a few exceptions, some visitors have expressed that the quality of the art is not up to par.

Despite its location a 30-40 minute taxi ride from Bangkok city centre, the journey to MOCA BANGKOK is well worth it. The museum is housed in modern rooms that are well-suited for exhibiting art. The museum is a beautiful place, offering different kinds of art. While nothing may stand out as particularly special, it is a nice place for those who appreciate contemporary art.

Visitors have also praised the museum's friendly and helpful staff. The gift shop is a must-visit, offering a variety of unique souvenirs. Some visitors have been lucky enough to visit while special exhibits, such as Banksy's, were on display. Overall, MOCA BANGKOK is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and those interested in Thai culture and history.
