About Nam Nao National Park

Nam Nao National Park, nestled in the Phetchabun Mountain Range, serves as a natural boundary between the Northeast and the North of Thailand. The park is a high mountain range that stretches through Chaiyaphum and Phetchabun provinces, with heights ranging from 650 to 1,200 meters above sea level. The park's highest point, Phu Dan I Pong, stands at a majestic 1,271 meters above sea level. The park is a haven of forests, watersheds, and streams, including the origins of long streams such as the Pa Sak River, Phong River, Loei River, Huai Khon Kaen, and Huai Nam Chuen, which flow into Ubonratana Dam and Chulabhorn Dam.

Nam Nao National Park is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The park offers a serene environment, with well-maintained and easy-to-find nature trails. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk through the lush greenery, spotting elephant footprints along the way. The park is impressively clean and well-maintained, a stark contrast to many other national parks in Thailand that are often overrun with loud music and litter.

One of the highlights of the park is the Sunrise View Point. A short walk up a hill rewards visitors with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, one can even spot Thailand's most romantic mountain, the bell-shaped Phu Kradung, in the distance.

The park also offers accommodation options for visitors. The cabins, though simple, are comfortable and well-equipped. The cabins are especially popular during the winter season when the park experiences cooler temperatures than most parts of Thailand. The park also offers camping options, with clean and spacious campsites and convenient bathroom facilities. The campsites are well-maintained and the park rangers are helpful and friendly.

Nam Nao National Park is also a great destination for day trips. The park is located along the scenic Highway #12, with several hiking trails leading to beautiful waterfalls directly off the highway. The park offers hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, with beautiful views, large pine forests, and beautiful stands of bamboo. However, visitors are advised to wear long pants and boots as the tall wet grass along the trails can be home to leeches.

The park also offers a taxi service to a beautiful sunset point and a sunrise point. There are three restaurants on site, offering a variety of Thai food. The park also has a supermarket that sells everything that visitors might need.

Nam Nao National Park is a haven for bird lovers, with several trails that are perfect for bird watching. The park also offers a night safari tour that takes visitors deep into the jungle, an area usually prohibited for public entry.

Getting to Nam Nao National Park is easy. Buses leave from Loei bus terminal every 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Visitors can simply tell the conductor that they are heading to the camping site at Nam Nao. The park is a great destination for those who love nature and wish to relax in a clean campsite surrounded by pines, with few people around, in a comfortable cooling climate.
