About Nan Noble House

Nestled away from the bustling city center, there lies a charming house that is a must-see for any traveler. This house, with its fascinating explanations about weaving, is a hidden gem that offers a unique insight into the local culture and history.

This house, known as the Lanna noble house, is an authentic Lanna style two-story teak house that is over a century old. Once the residence of Chao Fongkham, a descendant of the former lord of Nan, it is now occupied by her descendants and serves as a well-preserved museum and learning space. The house is set in a beautiful garden and is less than a ten-minute drive from the city. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and traditional Lanna songs can be heard softly playing in the background, setting a serene and authentic atmosphere. There is also a Lanna weaving demonstration on the ground under the house, offering a unique and engaging experience for visitors.

The house is filled with a variety of Thai objects, from weapons to jewelry, which are fun to view and offer a glimpse into the local culture. The house is larger than it appears from the outside, and the garden is beautifully maintained. The house is a bargain to visit, with a suggested donation of only 20 baht, and it is worth visiting if you are in the area. It will likely take about an hour to walk around and view everything.

The house is a tranquil spot that is 192 years old. The replica rooms are carefully maintained, and the traditional feel is strong. There are people downstairs demonstrating traditional northern Thai activities, offering a unique and engaging experience for visitors.

Visiting this house offers a fascinating insight into how the nobles lived in Lanna many years ago. The host is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, offering tours of the place, playing music, and demonstrating cotton spinning.

The Nan Noble House is a unique and remarkable place. It can be considered a museum, a tourist attraction, a heritage home, a folklore institution, or a stopover on the way to other spots in the city. The house is a well-preserved example of a Thai house built over a century ago, offering a glimpse into the life of Thai noblemen in this province from the olden days. The house is remarkably well-maintained, with immaculate detail in the upkeep of the furniture, the flooring, the ornaments, and the garden. The ground floor has exhibitions of looms, basketry, and a shop selling locally-made clothes. The Nan Noble House offers a unique and engaging experience, different from the many temples in the city.

The house was built some 150 years ago by Chao Anantaworarithidej, in classic Northern Thai style. The oldest parts of the house show planks formed by axe and knife, before large saws were available in Nan. Such large teak houses were reserved for the nobility, and this house is probably the best preserved of such noble houses in the whole province. The house was moved to its current site, on a quiet soi behind Wat Pragert, by Chao Fongkham's parents, about 100 years ago. It is now occupied by Chao Fongkham's children. The house is filled with photos and artifacts, and looks much the same as it did all those years ago. Entry is free, but donations are appreciated to help maintain the house. The Nan Noble House is a hidden gem that is well worth a visit.
