About Nong Han

Nong Han Lake, the largest natural lake in Thailand, is a sight to behold. Despite its size, it's often referred to as a pond due to its shallow depth and abundance of lily pads. However, it's not recommended for swimming due to the presence of parasites. The lake is surrounded by picturesque old villages, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. An early morning boat ride to one of the islands is a must if time permits. Adjacent to the lake, Sakon Nakhon city boasts a large park and exercise trail, offering a perfect blend of nature and urban life.

Not far from the lake, in the Nong Han District of Udon Thani Province, lies the renowned archaeological site of Ban Chiang. This site has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1992. The museum at Ban Chiang offers a wealth of information and well-organized exhibits, making it a must-visit for history buffs.

Nong Han is not just a lake, but a large body of water that stretches as far as the eye can see. The best place to appreciate its vastness is from the Nong Han viewpoint, located on the road towards Nakhon Phanom. Here, boardwalks lead through the rushes and lily pads to a small island, offering a unique perspective of the lake. Despite the presence of water hyacinth, an invasive weed, the lake is teeming with lilies and bird life, including cranes and ducks, making it a haven for nature lovers.

A boat trip on the lake is a relaxing and worthwhile experience. For a small fee, visitors can enjoy a 90-minute journey through the water hyacinth to a small island adorned with Buddha shrines. A walk around the island reveals a path among the trees, offering stunning views of the vast expanse of water.

Despite its beauty, some areas around the lake could benefit from better organization and cleanliness. The swamps, in particular, are often littered with water hyacinth.

Nong Han is more than just a lake; it's a charming little town nestled between Sawang daen din and Udon Thani in Isaan. The town is dotted with cool little restaurants, making it a great pit stop for travelers. It's also en route to another town, kompawa pi, known for its monkey-filled trees.

Adjacent to the lake, near the city center, is a large park that locals frequent for exercise and recreation. The park offers a variety of activities, including feeding big catfish, open-air dance aerobics, and boat tours on the lake in a traditional Thai longboat. For a small fee, visitors can embark on a one-hour boat voyage to an island in the middle of the lake, home to a disused temple and old scouting camp. This delightful park is a great place to spend a few hours, offering a blend of relaxation and adventure.
