About Odeon Roundabout
The entrance gate to Chinatown in Bangkok is a sight to behold. Located right next to the Wat Taimrit, also known as the Golden Buddha temple, it serves as an excellent starting point for a walk through Chinatown. It's also a convenient spot for taxi drop-offs, making it easily accessible for tourists and locals alike. To truly appreciate the gate and the area it leads to, it's recommended to either hire a guide or read up on the history of Chinatown. Without this knowledge, one might simply see the gate as a monument to photograph, missing out on the rich history and cultural significance it holds. A knowledgeable guide can provide interesting facts and insights, enhancing the overall experience.
The Chinatown Gate is an impressive monument, standing firmly in the middle of a large roundabout at the entrance of Yaowarat Road. If one approaches from the direction of Hua Lamphong station, they'll see the gate lit up by perhaps a thousand watts of floodlights, making it impossible to miss. The imposing structure serves as a beacon, guiding visitors into the heart of Chinatown.
The roundabout where the gate is located is named after the Odeon cinema, which was demolished in the 1980s. The road that extends from it, Yaowarat, cuts right across Chinatown. Its path is said to resemble a dragon's curvy body. In 1999, the gate was built to celebrate King Bhumibol's 72nd birthday. It not only shows the loyalty of the Thai Chinese to the ruling monarchy but also serves to revitalize old Chinatown as a tourist attraction. The gate features inscriptions in both Thai and Chinese to honor the king. The white jade lions and rabbit were added later, gifts from the Chinese government to celebrate later birthdays of the king, who was born in the year of the rabbit.
The gate is a typical Chinese gate, officially welcoming visitors to Chinatown in Bangkok. It's quite large and picturesque, providing excellent photo opportunities for visitors. The ornate entrance is a grand introduction to the historic area of Bangkok, with its impressive ornamentation catching the eye of all who pass by. It's a short walk from the Hua Lamphong MRT station, making it easily accessible for those using public transportation.
While some may argue that the gate is nothing more than a photo opportunity, it's worth noting that it serves as a significant landmark. The Chinese gate in the middle of the roundabout indicates the entry to Chinatown and leads directly to Yaowarat Road. While it may be a quick stop for a photo or two, it's a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the area and a welcoming beacon to all who wish to explore Chinatown.
