About Pang Ung

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, there lies a serene lake, nestled amidst a lush forest. This tranquil spot offers rooms for rent, providing a peaceful retreat for those seeking a break from the daily grind. While it may not be a spectacle, it certainly offers a charming place to unwind and enjoy the simplicity of nature.

Visiting during the low season, particularly in August, offers an even more serene experience. With hardly any other people in sight, the tranquility is palpable, making it an ideal place to relax for a few hours or even overnight in one of the available bungalows. A ride on a bamboo raft around the lake is highly recommended, offering a unique perspective of the surroundings for a modest fee. A drive around the lake also offers ample opportunities for photography enthusiasts. The location is conveniently situated just 6 km from Ban Rak Thai.

For those who enjoy camping, this place offers a unique experience. Unlike other campsites, this one is located right beside the lake, offering a different kind of charm. While it may not offer the best views of the sunrise or sunset due to its location in the midst of mountains, the morning view is simply breathtaking. The sight of mists hovering over the lake's surface is truly stunning. The temperature is comfortable, not as cold as Inthanon. For a small fee, foreigners can also enjoy a bamboo boat ride around the lake. Basic amenities like mattresses and tents are available for rent, and food is easy to procure.

However, visiting during the low season can feel a bit eerie. The town can seem deserted, with the visitor's center closed and the lake level low. The overgrown surroundings can give the impression of a ghost town, which may not be to everyone's liking. However, it's believed that the vibe is quite different during the high season, with cooler weather and a more relaxed atmosphere.

One of the most unforgettable experiences is witnessing the early morning fog at Pang Ung in Mae Hong Son. Arriving before dawn, around 5:30 a.m., is recommended to fully appreciate this spectacle. The sight of the fog gradually covering the lake like a blanket, illuminated by the rising sun, is truly mesmerizing. This phenomenon, which lasts about 30-45 minutes, is particularly prominent during the winter months between November and January.

This place is considered one of the best in Northern Thailand. The sight of the fog slowly crawling from the mountains as the sun begins to rise is truly unforgettable. The lake turns to gold as the sunlight hits its surface, creating a breathtaking scene. A walk inside the forest park reveals a beautiful cherry blossom tree in full bloom during January. The sight of swans gracefully floating on the giant lake adds to the charm. Despite the cold winter temperatures, the beauty of this place makes it a must-visit for every traveler.

Living in Thailand for three years, one visitor found this experience to be truly unique. Despite the cold temperatures early in the morning, the stunning sunrise over the lake made it worthwhile. The sight of the mist on the lake and the sunrise above it was truly stunning. The fact that there were no other foreigners around made the experience feel even more local. Accommodation options include camping or staying in a one-room bungalow with a communal shower or a bungalow with a cold water shower.
