About Peranakan Phuket Museum

The Peranakan Phuket Museum is a unique destination that offers a journey back in time, allowing visitors to experience a different side of Phuket. The museum tells a story that has been passed down through generations, showcasing a lifestyle, culture, and arts that have been accumulated over centuries. This new landmark in Phuket offers more than just a museum, it also provides a variety of other experiences.

At the museum, visitors can indulge in Phuket's local cuisine at the City of Gastronomy, Yaya Kitchen. They can also take memorable photos at Baba Studio, shop for unique items at the Peranakan Phuket Boutique, and marvel at the local jeweler's masterpieces at Taweesuwan. Despite its small size, the museum is well maintained and offers a comprehensive understanding of the Peranakan culture. It is tourist-friendly and uses technology to help visitors easily understand this unique Southeast Asian culture.

However, some visitors may find the museum to be quite small. But even within its compact space, it houses a mini cafe that serves delicious green tea. The museum provides knowledge about the culture, tradition, and living of the Phuket people. An English-speaking guide is available to lead visitors through the museum, providing brilliant explanations. Visitors can also try on traditional dress and take pictures at the studio for a fee.

The museum also houses a restaurant that serves a great taste of Southern food. It is worth visiting, especially for foreigners who can purchase a Muse Pass for Baht299. This pass allows access to 63 museums and learning centers all over Thailand and is valid for one year from the issue date. It can only be used once for each museum and learning center, but it can help save a lot of costs.

The museum has a smallish collection of interesting exhibits. It is worth visiting as part of the museum pass, but perhaps not as a standalone visit. The museum is located in the old town and records the history of the Straits Chinese in Phuket. It was formerly a Chinese school.

The museum has been very well thought-out. It provides a clear picture of the Peranakan culture (Hokkien-Malay) in Phuket. There are interactive displays, personal artifacts handed down from older generations, building models demonstrating the Chino-Portuguese architectural style, family life, garments, accessories, ceremonial items, kitchen, and other everyday items showing their way of life.

The museum also houses a garment and costume shop, a large jewelry shop that features 17k gold and Peranakan pieces, a hotel-quality restaurant offering Thai, Phuket, Peranakan, fusion dishes, and a modern café that serves some of the best treats and ice-cream in town. The museum is not a typical one, it offers an amazing experience where visitors can learn many things about Phuketian and its cultures. The local costume is especially liked by visitors. The restaurant located in the same building serves excellent food, making it a must-visit destination in Phuket.
