About Phimai Historical Park
Phimai is a place of power and harmony, a testament to the grandeur of Khmer architecture. The attention to detail in the design and layout of the site is evident, and the well-maintained gardens, with their mature trees and serene ponds, provide a tranquil space for relaxation and meditation. The buildings, meticulously restored in the 1960s, are a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Shivaism, and less-defined animist practices, creating a unique sense of harmony. One of the great advantages of Phimai is its location off the typical tourist track. Most of the time, visitors will find small groups of locals - families, teenagers, and school groups - soaking up the atmosphere and history. The world seems to slow down a bit here, making it a perfect place for self-renewal. The best time to visit is in the mornings, where one can observe the dedicated workers maintaining the site, sweeping the grass, brushing down the stonework, and gathering dead branches.
Phimai is the end point of the ancient Khmer imperial highway, which stretched approximately 400 kilometers from Angkor Wat. Some have likened it to a miniature Angkor Wat, but its smaller scale and intimacy impart a spiritual quality that is hard to describe without experiencing it. The limited restoration allows visitors to sense both the glory and decay of the Khmer empire and of life itself.
The journey to Phimai is about 4 hours by bus to Korat, then another 2 hours by car. Despite the travel time, the trip is worth it. The architecture is typical of the Classical Angkor style, and the site is not overrun with tourists, making it a great place to visit and enjoy at a leisurely pace. However, parking can be a bit of a challenge due to limited lots in front of the park.
Phimai is a very accessible site, located right in the middle of the town. It's a great place for those who love ancient history and prefer to avoid the crowds of tourists. After a relaxing lunch, visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk around the site and take in the scenery.
Phimai, formerly known as Viyamapura, is an Angkor style temple that was built during the reigns of Suryavaman II and Jayavarman VII. The journey from Angkor to Phimai is about 240 kilometers, with rest houses, stone bridges, and wooden bridges along the way.
Despite being one of the most impressive ancient cities of Southeast Asia, Phimai remains relatively unknown and wonderfully uncrowded. Visitors can wander around the quiet, shaded grounds almost alone, a stark contrast to the bustling crowds of Angkor Wat.
The Phimai historical park is a beautiful temple that has been restored and is well worth a visit. Visitors can travel from Khon Kaen by bus, getting off at hwy 2 and Talat khae cross road, then catching another bus towards Phimai. The journey is affordable and can be done in a day, making it a convenient and enriching experience for all.
