About Phuket Town Local Bus Station (Terminal 1)

Phuket, a tropical paradise in Thailand, offers a variety of transportation options for travelers. One of the most popular and cost-effective ways to explore the island is by using the local bus service. For a mere 30 baht, one can travel from the major beaches to the main street of Phuket town. The bus service operates from 06:30 am to 06:30 pm, providing a reliable mode of transport, despite the lack of a fixed timetable. The bus drivers are known for their helpful and knowledgeable nature, making the journey even more enjoyable.

Terminal 1 is a popular spot for travelers, providing accurate and easy-to-understand directions. It also displays a timetable for those traveling from Phuket to Khao Lak and other destinations. An added advantage is the hourly airport bus service that operates to and from the terminal. The area around Terminal 1 is dotted with affordable hotels, conveniently located near the Old Town.

The local bus service between Karon and Phuket Town is another great way to experience local transportation. For just 40 baht, one can travel from Karon or Kata into Phuket Town. The Blue Bus, an open-sided truck, operates from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm approximately every 20 minutes. However, these times should be taken with a pinch of salt as there are no fixed bus stops. One simply needs to wave at the approaching blue truck-like bus on the main street, and the driver will stop. Fares are collected halfway through the journey, adding to the local experience.

Traveling from Phuket to Krabi is also straightforward and affordable. Minivans depart every hour, costing 140 baht. From Krabi, a local bus can take you to Ao Nang for an additional 50 baht. The journey from Nai Harn beach to Phuket by local bus costs 40 baht, followed by a short walk to the Old bus terminal to catch the bus to Krabi.

However, it's worth noting that taxi prices in Phuket can be quite high, often three times the cost of a similar distance in Bangkok. The local buses offer a cheaper alternative, albeit slower. Despite their basic nature, there's a certain satisfaction in avoiding the inflated taxi prices.

The Government Orange airport bus is another economical option for travelers. The bus, which runs every hour from 6 am to 8.30 pm, charges 100 baht for adults while infants and children can ride for free. The journey to the airport takes around 80 minutes, depending on traffic. The bus is air-conditioned, although a bit old. Alternatively, a taxi can be arranged for 650 baht.

The Songthaew, a type of passenger vehicle in Thailand, is another cheap way to travel around Phuket. For 30 THB, one can travel from Patong to the Central Festival Shopping Centre and Old Phuket Town. To board the bus, simply wave it down, and to get off, press the buzzer on the ceiling of the bus. However, this service does not operate from beach to beach. To travel from Patong to Karon, one would need to go into Phuket Town and change buses. The destination of the buses is clearly written in English, making it easy for travelers to navigate their way around.
