About Sangtham Shrine
Nestled in the heart of Phuket's old town, the Sangtham Shrine is a small yet captivating Chinese temple that has become a must-visit spot for tourists. This beautiful shrine, also known as the Shrine of the Serene Light, is a hidden gem that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling streets of Phuket.Visitors to the shrine are greeted by a nondescript narrow gate on the main road, which opens up to reveal a colourful and peaceful sanctuary. The temple is adorned with vibrant hues and intricate details, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. The tranquillity of the shrine also makes it an ideal place for a short meditation session.
The Sangtham Shrine is not just a place of worship, but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Phuket. Built over a hundred years ago by Luang Amnat Nararak, a Chinese senior government officer, the shrine is a well-preserved example of Hokkien Chinese architecture. The artistic wall art and stonework add to the charm of the shrine, which was recognized with the Conservation Award by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 1997.
Despite its small size, the shrine is well worth a visit. Tourists often stop by after enjoying a meal at the nearby Tu Kab Khao restaurant, spending 10-15 minutes exploring the shrine and soaking in its serene atmosphere. The shrine is also conveniently located near other attractions in the old town district, making it easy to include in a day of sightseeing.
While the temple itself is quite ordinary, the street art on its walls adds a unique touch to the shrine. Visitors are encouraged to take off their shoes before entering the temple, a common practice in many Asian temples. The shrine is also a smoke-free zone, ensuring a clean and peaceful environment for all visitors.
The Sangtham Shrine is a beautiful and serene spot that offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Phuket. Whether you're looking for a peaceful spot for meditation, a unique photo opportunity, or a chance to explore the local culture, the Sangtham Shrine is a must-visit spot in Phuket's old town.
