About Shrine of King Taksin The Great
The tranquility and cleanliness of this place is truly captivating. It's a green oasis in the heart of the city, where respect and orderliness are the norm. The park is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, where one can spend anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. In the midst of the city lies the Tak Stop, a shrine temple with historical significance. It's a great place for a quick stop, especially for those traveling through the city. Just across the street, one can enjoy a delicious noodle lunch, adding to the overall experience.
The shrine is dedicated to King Taksin, who ruled between the Ayutthaya kingdom and the Chakri dynasty. His reign was marked by constant warfare, and it's said that he had a great love for horses. The shrine is surrounded by a small park, filled with a variety of trees, each labeled with their Latin names. An interesting tradition here involves offerings of pig heads, a practice believed to be of Chinese origin. The heads are left in the sun for a while before being taken home to be eaten.
Visiting Tak would be incomplete without a visit to this beautiful shrine. Its design is exquisite and it's very well maintained. It's a place where one can spend a considerable amount of time, exploring and appreciating the various elements. Even young children find it fascinating, thrilled at the chance to see the wonderful shrine of King Taksin the Great.
The shrine, though small, holds an interesting piece of history. It's a memorial to a great king in Thai history, whose disappearance led to the ascension of the current royal line. The story of his disappearance has several alternative versions attached to it, adding to the intrigue of the place.
The shrine is definitely worth a look, especially for those driving past. It's different from a temple as it's a shrine dedicated to a king, making it an important place for Thai people.
However, it's important to note that many overseas tourists often confuse the Shrine of King Taksin the Great, which is near Tak City, with the Shrine of King Naresuan the Great, which is in Mae Sot town, Tak Province. King Naresuan, a highly revered Siam monarch, was the king of Ayutthaya, and is famed for his heroic battles against the invading Burmese armies. He preceded King Taksin. The two kings can be easily identified in their statues and portraits. King Naresuan has a short cropped crew cut hair style, and King Taksin is rarely portrayed without his pointed conical hat. King Naresuan's life and reign is the subject of an epic Thai movie, which is repeatedly watched by Thai fans of the king and that part of Thai history.
