About Songkhla Lake
Thailand's largest inland body of water, Songkhla Lake, is a sight to behold. Despite its name, it is actually a lagoon, with its waters growing less salty as one travels up the lagoon away from its mouth. The lake is home to several islands and two significant bird sanctuaries, making it a haven for nature lovers. One of the lake's most serene and charming features is the island of Ko Yo. Accessible via a short drive from Songkhla City, with bridges connecting the island to the mainland, Ko Yo is a must-visit. The island boasts a Southern Thai Folklore Museum, perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the lake, the bridges, and the city's shoreline in the distance. Ko Yo also features beautiful temples, cafes, and seafood restaurants, providing a rich cultural experience.
Songkhla Lake is also home to a unique monument, divided into three parts: the head, navel, and tail. The head of the serpent symbolizes the intelligence and wisdom of the city's people and is one of the most visited places in Songkhla.
The lake's brackish waters offer a view of Songkhla's old city on the peninsula between the lake and the Gulf of Thailand. The area is dotted with seafood restaurants and offers views of fisherman boats anchored onshore.
For a unique experience, visitors can take a fishing boat ride on Songkhla Lake. The trip, which lasts less than an hour, offers a close look at the Tinsulanond Bridge that connects Songkhla and Ko Yo, as well as the fishing huts, the blue sky, lush greenery on islands, and the placid lake.
For those with a sense of adventure, a ferry ride to a village where time seems to have stood still is a must. The locals are extremely friendly and willing to share food with visitors, making it a truly immersive experience. However, it is recommended to have your own car for this journey.
Another attraction at Songkhla Lake is the Hat Yai Dragon Head. Constructed in 2007, this dragon sculpture is divided into three parts: the head at the lake, the body at the park, and the tail stretching along the side way. It symbolizes wisdom and intelligence and is a new attraction for Songkhla Lake.
Songkhla Lake and the Royal Lake (Thale Luang) are unique in Thailand, both culturally and geographically. The area is vast, with waters that seem to stretch on forever. The villages around the lake support an inland fishing culture and are quaint and picturesque. For those with time, a day trip around the entire lake is highly recommended. The journey, which covers about 250 kms, offers many things to see and do along the way.
