About Songkhla National Museum
Nestled within a 19th-century former governor's mansion, this museum is a treasure trove of artifacts from the province. The museum's cleanliness, both inside and out, is commendable, and the shady atmosphere coupled with clear weather makes for a delightful viewing experience. The structure of the museum itself is a unique beauty, serving as a repository for the art, culture, and antiques of Songkhla Province. It has been a learning center for students and interested parties for years, with lecturers providing detailed knowledge to help visitors understand the history of Songkhla Province. The museum is a must-visit if you find yourself in town. It operates from 9 AM to 4 PM, Wednesday through Sunday, and remains closed on Thai national holidays. The entry fee is approximately 160 baht. While there are stairs to climb and the absence of air conditioning might be a challenge for some, those who appreciate old architecture, artifacts, and the history of old Songkhla will find it worth the effort. The museum is also a haven for photography enthusiasts, with its collection of handcrafted items. Visitors should be prepared to spend at least an hour exploring the displays and watching the films.
The museum offers an interesting experience, with its articles and displays capturing the attention of visitors for hours. The documentation and videos are available in English or have English subtitles, making it accessible to a wider audience. The outside grounds are equally captivating, adorned with beautiful flowers, making the visit a great learning adventure.
Songkhla, the town where the museum is located, is one of the most charming Thai towns. It is situated on a sandy peninsula between an inlet and the Gulf of Thailand, cut off from the hustle and bustle of Hat Yai and the rest of Thailand. The town's seaside atmosphere is its greatest asset. The Songkhla National Museum, set in a 130-year-old Chinese mansion with wooden floors, soaring rooftops, and bright red shutters, is probably the town's best sight. The museum's collection is impressive, featuring a fine collection of Sriwijaya bronzes dating back 1000 years or more, Chinese porcelain, and beautiful woodwork from an 18th-century wat.
The museum offers a journey back in time, showcasing how people lived in the area over 300 years ago. English language support is available, and the staff is always ready to share more about the history. However, it's worth noting that the museum is closed on Mondays.
While some visitors might find the museum's collection a bit dull and the entry fee for non-Thai visitors a bit steep, others find it perfectly suited to their tastes. The exhibitions are an eclectic mix of items, ranging from a pile of whale bones to examples of very heavy furniture. This kind of collection, while perhaps lacking in a well-organized educational aim, is visually and intellectually entertaining and full of surprises. The true star of the museum, however, is the building itself, a beautifully restored Chinese merchant's house. The museum is a place where one can spend a leisurely hour or so, away from the crowds.
