Songkran, Thailand's most significant public holiday, is a celebration of the traditional Thai New Year. The festivities are particularly vibrant on the backpacker's favourite Khao San Road and neighbouring Rambutree, which transform into one of the country's biggest tourist havens during this period. The streets come alive with a carnival atmosphere, a delightful blend of Thai tradition and the fun-loving spirit of travellers.

Decoratively painted elephants roam the streets, and children gleefully throw ice-cold buckets of water at policemen. If you're out and about, be prepared for a soaking. No one is exempt from the fun, not even those arriving with bags. The festival takes place between the 13th and 15th of April, with everyone armed with giant water guns and donning Hawaiian-style floral 'Song Kran Shirts'. The traditional water pouring is symbolic of washing away sins.

However, the experience can be overwhelming for some. The sheer number of people and the limited space can make the area around Khao San Road particularly challenging to navigate. Some have found celebrating the festival in other locations, such as Phuket, to be a more enjoyable experience.
