About Sunthon Phu Museum

Tucked away from the usual tourist trail, there lies an unusual pair of temples that offer a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. Despite their relative obscurity, these temples are a hidden gem worth exploring. The site is divided into two main sections, each housing a temple of its own.

The West building is home to the main Buddha, a magnificent figure carved from pure white stone, earning it the name The White Buddha. The East building, known as Bhikkhuni Viharn, houses an image of Buddha's step-mother and a rare collection of 52 images of female Bhikkhunis surrounding an image of Mahapajapati Gotami. A Bhikkuni is an ordained female monastic in Buddhism, with their male counterparts known as Bhikkhus. Mahapajapati Gotami holds a special place in Buddhist history as the foster mother, step-mother, and maternal aunt of the Buddha.

Not far from these temples, within the grounds of Wat Thepthidaram, lies a museum dedicated to Thailand's most famous poet, Sunthorn Phu. Known for his epic 'Phra Aphai Mani', which inspired movies such as Pra A Paimanee, The Adventure of Sudsakorn, and Legend of Sudsakorn, Sunthorn Phu's influence on Thai culture is undeniable. The museum offers an interactive experience, with virtual reality allowing for portraits of guests to be taken with a fictionalized Sunthorn Phu. Traditional Thai costumes can be rented for these photos, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the experience. The museum also houses original documents from the monastery and one of Cambodian origin, which are set to be preserved in glass cases.

The museum and the nearby temples offer a unique blend of history and technology. The museum, in particular, is equipped with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, allowing visitors to take photos that are sent to them after the tour. This combination of traditional culture and modern technology makes for a fun and engaging experience.

Sunthorn Phu, often referred to as the Shakespeare of Thailand, played a significant role in the country's history, particularly during the reign of King Rama II. A visit to the museum dedicated to his life and works is a must for history buffs and poetry lovers alike. The museum offers a wealth of information about this influential figure, and the foreign monk who guides visitors around the museum is known for his entertaining and friendly demeanor. The museum also offers a welcome respite from the heat, with air conditioning providing a cool break from the humid Thai weather.

Sunthorn Phu's legacy is kept alive through this museum, which serves as a testament to his contributions to Thai literature and culture. His works, written during the Rattanakosin period, continue to resonate with people today, making him a beloved figure in Thai history. The museum offers a unique opportunity to delve into his life's journey and gain a deeper understanding of the man behind the poetry.

In conclusion, a visit to these temples and the museum offers a unique blend of history, culture, and technology. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a poetry lover, or simply a curious traveler, this off-the-beaten-path experience is sure to leave a lasting impression.
