About Surat Thani City Pillar Shrine
The City Shrine in Surat Thani is a sight to behold. Its white-on-white architecture is a stunning spectacle that can be quickly appreciated even if one is just passing by on the way to Ko Lamphou Park. Although there might not be much to do, it's a place worth paying respects to, if one feels inclined to do so. The shrine is easily accessible and offers great photo opportunities. It's within walking distance of most places, making it a must-visit spot for anyone in the area. However, visitors should be cautious when dealing with tour companies in Surat Thani. There have been unfortunate incidents where tourists were advised to leave their bags to get food, only to discover later that their money or valuables were stolen. This is particularly true for a certain tour company located at Talad Mai Road, between Alley 27 and 29. It's always wise to keep an eye on personal belongings and never leave valuables unattended.
The City Shrine is often described as an oasis of calm and is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Surat Thani. It only requires a short visit but is well worth the time. If one happens to be by the river, possibly waiting for one of the night boats, it's a short walk from Bandon pier. Visitors are allowed inside the perimeter fence during daylight hours, where they can visit the shrine itself. There is no entrance charge, but donation boxes are available for those who wish to contribute.
Visitors should note that there are certain rules to be followed when visiting the shrine. Dressing and behaving respectfully is a must, and inappropriate attire such as bikinis is not allowed. If one wishes to ascend the steps to the actual shrine, shoes must be removed. At night, the shrine is beautifully floodlit, with the lights changing color, providing a fantastic photo opportunity.
The City Shrine in Surat is believed by locals to house the Spirit of Surat Thani. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the ceremony outside and inside the shrine to show respect. Flowers, candles, and incense for the outside ceremony, as well as colorful pieces of cloth for the inside ceremony, can be purchased just inside the park surrounding the shrine. Donations are also appreciated. The ceremony involves offering the flowers to the Spirit, lighting the candle and incense, and placing them in specially designed holders. Inside the shrine, one ties the colorful clothes on each of the four pillars, places the gold leaf on the pillars, and strikes each of the drums three times. The local Thai people are very hospitable and are always ready to assist visitors who are unsure of what to do.
In conclusion, Surat Thani's City Shrine is a beautiful and serene place that offers a unique cultural experience. However, visitors should be cautious and mindful of their belongings, especially when dealing with tour companies. Despite this, the City Shrine remains a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Surat Thani.
