The First Thailao Friendship Bridge

Nong Khai, Isan

📍 Location of The First Thailao Friendship Bridge

About The First Thailao Friendship Bridge

The journey to this location can be a bit of a mixed bag, depending on the time of day and the mode of transport chosen. For those who arrive late at night, they may find the area somewhat unwelcoming. The local shops, including food outlets, close early and are not open past 7 pm. The only available option for late-night arrivals is the 7-Eleven. The area can feel a bit isolated and foreigner-unfriendly, with locals seemingly unresponsive to requests for assistance. The area has a reputation for being somewhat dangerous, with a unique local population.

However, for those who are early risers, the experience can be quite different. The first bus departs from the station at the corner of Talad Sao at 6:30 am. This bus stop is conveniently located next to Wat Tay and the Phontong lines. The bus service is commendable for its fair pricing, with all passengers paying the same fare of 8,000 KPS. The bus is a popular choice for locals commuting to work, with many alighting at offices and factories outside the town. For those with limited time, the mini bus service from Talad Sao station, which starts its first round at 7:30 am, is a good option. However, be prepared to pay a special fee of 8,000 KPS if you reach the immigration checkpoint before 8:00 am, as well as a transfer bus ticket to Thailand for 6,000 KPS.

For those interested in seeing more of the area, there are videos available on YouTube and Instagram by Jair Canada, which provide a visual guide to the region, including how to cross the Friendship Bridge. The bridge is easily accessible and the Nong Khai train station is conveniently located near the Thailand border.

The experience of crossing the bridge at sundown is particularly memorable. The sun setting over the Mekong River provides a beautiful backdrop for the journey. The shuttle service is efficient and the immigration process is quick and friendly. There is also a duty-free shop on the Lao side. The trip from the border to Vientiane takes about 30-40 minutes by local bus.

For the more adventurous, it is possible to travel from Thailand to Laos by motorbike. However, this requires the motorbike to be registered in the traveler's name and proof of ownership must be shown. The process involves visiting three different stations on both the Thai and Lao sides of the border, which can take up to four hours. Despite the lengthy process, it is a journey that has been successfully undertaken by many.

The transfer process is generally easy, with the bus fare being 15bht to Thailand and 20bht back. Waiting times are minimal and queues are usually manageable. The Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge provides a quick and easy way to visit South Lao and Vientiane from Thailand. Despite some of the challenges, the journey offers a unique experience and a chance to see a different side of these two countries.
