About The Toad Museum

Toad's World in Yasothon, Thailand, is a unique and intriguing destination for those interested in the role of toads in ecosystems. This tourism icon of the Central Isaan Region offers a fun and educational experience, with static storyboards and interactive audiovisual displays. The highlight of the visit is the impressive lookout from the mouth of the gigantic toad structure, offering panoramic views and soothing breezes from the nearby lake.

The museum itself is a treasure trove of interesting history. It tells the story of the toad and Buddha, along with a wealth of other Thai history. The surroundings, however, may not be as picturesque as one might expect from photos. The river bank is undergoing long-term work, and the view from the toad's mouth balcony over the river and surrounds can be somewhat bleak. Despite this, the museum is still worth a visit, especially if combined with a trip to the small market near the Toad and a meal at the great restaurant just up the road.

Visitors to Toad's World can also learn about the giant toad's relevance to the Bun Bang Fai Festival. The tale is told through storyboards with pictures inside the toad museum, along with details of the Bun Bang Fai rockets. However, the area around the giant toad can be a little disappointing, with litter left behind by tourists. There is also a giant Naga (snake) that visitors can walk through for more information. During the Bun Bang Fai festival, the naga even squirts water from its mouth.

While the local significance of toads in Thai culture is the main appeal for locals, the site offers interesting sights for all visitors. There are food stalls and parking available, and those who are up for a little adventure can climb the stairs inside the frog for views of a small lake.

A short walk from the Ban Kun Ya restaurant, the Toad Museum, or Phraya Khan Khak Museum, is a new landmark in Yasothon. The building, shaped like a sitting toad, is located on the banks of the Thuan River and stands at an impressive 19 meters in height. The museum displays the history of the province, including Bang Fai rockets, legends, and scientific content. It also houses display models and exhibit specimens of toads, along with information about 500 types of toads from around the world. The toad sits in a landscaped area alongside a newly built Dragon and is accompanied by shops selling clothing, drinks, and other items of interest. The museum is free to visit and is air-conditioned, making it a comfortable and educational experience for all.
