About Three Pagodas Pass

The Three Pagodas, despite their small stature, hold a significant place in history. They mark the point where the Thai side of the Death Railway met the Burmese side. Although not grand in size, the site is a testament to the historical importance of the area. The pagodas are nestled in a pleasant patch of green grass, providing a serene atmosphere. There is also a small memorial dedicated to the Death Railway, a poignant reminder of the past.

The Three Pagoda Pass serves as a border post between Thailand and Myanmar. It's a semi-official border, where Thais can pass freely with only an identity card. However, there are no immigration facilities for non-Thais to cross and re-enter. Despite this, the Thai side of the border offers a variety of souvenir shops and duty-free goods. The 20 km drive from the nearest Thai town of Sangkhlaburi is worth it for the photo opportunity and the experience of visiting such a unique location.

The area is also home to the largest wooden bridge in Thailand, the sunken temples, and a man-made lake. The chance to stand on the place where the ancient invasion of Burma against Thailand took place is historically worthwhile. The bustling and efficient Thailand contrasts sharply with the divided and racially divided Myanmar, providing a striking backdrop to the site.

The area also offers a glimpse into where cultures meet. There are replicas of the three Pagodas on the Thai side of the crossing to show tourists what they are like. The real Pagodas are in Myanmar and can't be seen from the crossing point. There is a small cluster of shops and stalls selling locally made goods, food stalls, and coffee shops. However, visitors should be cautious when purchasing duty-free alcohol and cigarettes, as sellers often tip off local police and customs.

Despite the unimpressive size of the pagodas and the surrounding dead grass during the dry season, the site has a particular attraction. It's easy to imagine a train stopped there in the middle of the night, taking on coal and water, and the crew eating at one of the many stalls that would have been there at the time. Now, the area is a sleepy place, with a market selling the same as so many markets. However, there is a restaurant about 50 meters south of the actual border crossing, with its back railing right on the border with Burma, that serves a great Pad Thai.

The area also offers a taste of the Indian influence in the food. The Burmese Inn Sangkhlaburi serves delicious Burmese curries, particularly the tea leaf one. The area is also known for its samosas, a popular Indian snack, sold by street hawkers. Despite the long trip from Bangkok, the area offers a unique experience and a glimpse into the history and culture of Thailand and Myanmar.
