About Traditional Karen Elephant Village
The Traditional Karen Elephant Village (TKEV) in Thailand is a sanctuary that comes highly recommended by many who have had the privilege of visiting. This independent sanctuary, one of the few that remained open during the COVID pandemic, is home to elephants that have been passed down through multiple generations. The staff at TKEV are not only knowledgeable and friendly, but they also engage visitors in learning about the history and culture of the elephant tourism industry in Thailand.Visitors to TKEV can expect a full-day experience that runs from 8:30am to 5:30pm. This includes pick-up from your hotel, feeding, walking and bathing with the elephants, and drop-off back at your hotel. The experience is so enriching that many visitors can't help but sing praises about it.
TKEV is not just an elephant sanctuary, but also a place that cares for the local village of Nong Tao. This local business is more focused on the welfare of the elephants and the local community than on profit-making. Visitors to TKEV often feel that their visit contributes to the community rather than just filling someone's pocket. The sanctuary was built with the aim of bringing the elephants back to the village and giving back to the community.
The experience at TKEV is relaxed and never rushed. Visitors are picked up right on time and greeted by friendly hosts. The day starts with making food for the elephants, followed by meeting and spending time with them. The highlight of the day is going into the water with the elephants, playing and cleaning them. The experience is rounded off with a great lunch and dinner.
For those who prefer to travel alone, TKEV offers a half-day tour guided by Non Chai, who is known for his humor and knowledge about elephants. He can also assist with overnight stays and other tours.
What sets TKEV apart from other camps in the area is the opportunity it provides for visitors to form a real bond with the elephants. This is made possible by the owner, Non-Chai, whose main objective is to allow such a bond to take place. The elephants at TKEV are treated as family, which has resulted in them having gentle natures and unique personalities. Non-Chai's playful nature is reflected in the elephants, especially Valentine, the big baby boy.
Visitors to TKEV not only get to spend time with the elephants, but also get to experience the daily life of the Karen Tribe Village. This is an experience that money can't buy. The hosts at TKEV are welcoming and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable.
In conclusion, TKEV is a sanctuary where the well-being of the elephants comes first. It's a place where visitors can have an amazing experience while contributing to a good cause. It's a place that Non, the owner, loves dearly, and this love is reflected in the way he cares for his elephants. TKEV is definitely a place worth visiting.
