About U Thong National Museum

The museum is a must-visit destination for those interested in the rich history and culture of Southeast Asia. It is a well-maintained establishment that offers a wealth of information about the ancient Dvaravati civilization. This region is believed to have been Suvarnabhumi, or the 'land of gold', which is recognized as the first place in Southeast Asia where Buddhism was established.

The museum houses a vast collection of ancient artifacts, including decorations, coins, sculptures, and Buddha images. One of the standout pieces is a Dhammajak, which is in excellent condition. The museum also employs the use of animation to narrate some of the stories, providing an engaging and interactive experience for visitors.

In addition to the main museum building, there is a traditional Thai Song Dam house nearby. This house displays various household appliances, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Thai Song Dam people. The staff at the museum are friendly and helpful, adding to the overall positive experience. As an added bonus, there was no entrance fee during the visit.

The museum is located in a modern, well-kept building in a small town. It defies expectations with its impressive displays and detailed explanations in both Thai and English. The exhibits primarily feature items discovered in the ruins of the ancient city of U Thong, which was once the capital of one of Thailand's old kingdoms.

Visitors often find themselves spending more time at the museum than initially planned, captivated by the wealth of knowledge and history it offers. The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, with an entrance fee of 150 baht for foreigners and 30 baht for locals. This museum is indeed an unexpected surprise, offering a deep dive into the rich history and culture of the region.
