About Wat Buppharam Or Wat Plai Klong
The temple, believed to be the oldest in Trat province, is a serene sanctuary that has stood the test of time for approximately 370 years. It is a treasure trove of historical and cultural artifacts, with a museum that houses a vast collection of Buddha images, relics, ancient ceramics, and both Chinese and European porcelains. The temple also boasts beautiful ancient Chinese murals adorning the walls of an old hall, and a scattering of religious structures throughout the grounds. It is a place that is certainly worth a visit. The temple is well cared for, with cleanliness standards that surpass the average provincial Thai temples. The trees and gardens are meticulously maintained, creating a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. The temple architecture is simple yet splendid, with small-scale structures that are tastefully decorated. The moss-covered stupas around the viharn and ordination hall add a touch of mystery and sacredness to the place. The design of the stupas is reminiscent of those found in old Ayuthaya temples. However, visitors may need to plan their visit in the morning or contact the temple in advance to ensure access to the halls and the principal Buddha image.
Wat Buppharam, as it is known, is an old temple that offers a natural and peaceful environment. It is not located in the city center, which means it is not crowded and visitors can enjoy a comfortable visit. Inside the temple buildings, one can admire the wall paintings. The temple grounds also house a free museum, making it a highly recommendable place to visit.
What sets Wat Plai Klong apart from many Thai temples is its integration with the local community. Unlike many Buddhist temples in Thailand that are enclosed within boundary walls, this temple is surrounded by local houses, markets, shops, and small Thai restaurants. This makes the temple very much a part of the local community that it serves, located right in the center of Trat City.
The temple is well-preserved and beautiful, with all the elements required for the perfect temple visit. Visitors are advised to bring a sarong to cover up and respect the signs. The temple is also home to many stray dogs and cats, adding to its charm. However, visitors are reminded to respect the space reserved for monks and the book of condolence for His Royal Highness.
While some may find the temple quite ordinary compared to the City Pillar, it is still a place of historical significance. It may not warrant a special journey for some, but it is a place that can be appreciated for its age and simplicity.
The temple complex is the oldest in Trat, established in 1648. For many Thai visitors, the highlight is seeing the oldest wooden Viharn in the country. Some visitors may also find amusement in the unique drunken dog statues. This temple complex offers a blend of history, culture, and a touch of whimsy, making it a noteworthy stop in Trat.
