About Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Established in 1630 A.D. by King Prasatthong as a tribute to his mother, this ancient Buddhist monastery is considered one of the most imposing religious sites. It is a popular spot for late afternoon and sunset visits, with many locals often seen dressed in traditional clothing, adding an interesting cultural element to the experience. As the sun sets, bats can be seen leaving their resting spaces inside the buildings, creating a unique spectacle. Despite ongoing restoration work on one of the stupas, the view of the sunset remains unobstructed and breathtaking.

Located just outside the central island, this temple is a marvel of fairly intact Khmer architecture. For an entry fee of 50 Baht, visitors can explore the large open grounds, adorned with stupas, Buddha statues, a main prang, and an altar with steps. Even though a part of the temple was off-limits due to restoration during the visit, it did not affect the overall experience or the amazing photo opportunities. Given the heat, it is recommended to rent a bike or a tuk-tuk to reach the temple if you're staying on the island. There are shady parts inside the main citadel, but it's still hot, so carrying a hat is advisable. The less explored open ground on the far side is excellent for viewing the sunset or sunrise. The temple is well worth a visit for a temple explorer, either as a solo venue or as part of the 220 Baht multi-temple ticket. Conveniently, food and light shopping options are available just across the road, and there is a large car park and bike locks just outside the ticket booth.

The structures of great beauty are still visible and should not be missed by visitors. Located at Ban Pom Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, on the edge of the Chao Phraya River on the west side of the city island, the temple is big and very beautiful. Activities include renting Thai costumes for photo sessions, and bicycles for rent to cycle around the temple. There are also shady spots perfect for taking pictures and relaxing.

The temple complex is covered by a 6-temple ticket, making it a convenient stop for those on a 2-hour boat cruise.
