About Wat Chana Songkhram

Wat Chana Songkhram is a sight to behold, with its beautiful main hall that is a testament to the intricate Thai architecture. The smaller buildings within the temple complex were undergoing renovation, adding a touch of modernity to the ancient structure. Visitors have the unique opportunity to witness the monks in prayer, although access to the praying hall is restricted.

This temple is not just a place of worship, but also a historical monument. It was built during the Aydhaya era and underwent major renovations around 235 years ago by Somdej Phrabovornrajjao Maha Surasinghanat, a younger brother of King Rama the 1st, the founder of the Chakri dynasty and Bangkok. The temple's name, Chana Songkram, translates to 'winning war', a fitting tribute to the Siam-Burma war during that period. The temple houses an amulet shirt from the 2nd King himself, kept inside the main Buddha image, adding to its historical significance.

The temple's design is unique and different from a royal palace style, locally known as the art Wang Na (front palace) style. This style can also be observed at the National Museum, which was a former palace of the second king, and at Wat Mahatat. The temple also has a special room dedicated to the storage of the second king descendants' remains. This room, which was closed to outsiders for decades, is now open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into how the royal house preserves their ancestors' remains.

The temple is adorned with beautiful decorations and statues, including a huge statue of Buddha as per tradition and many other smaller ones around it. The decorations around the temple are simply stunning, making it a visual treat for visitors. Despite being located in a bustling area, the temple offers a peaceful retreat, where one can forget about the noise and chaos of the outside world.

The temple is conveniently located near the Khao San Road, making it easily accessible for tourists. Visitors have the chance to witness various ceremonies and celebrations, although the language barrier might limit the understanding of these events. The temple is also a great spot for photography, with its stunning architecture and vibrant ceremonies.

The temple is known for its friendly atmosphere. Monks often invite passersby to come in and have a look around. The temple is quieter compared to those in the city centre, making it a peaceful place to visit. They provide robes for women to wrap themselves in, adhering to the temple's dress code. The temple also offers helpful advice on the best times to visit other sites and can arrange for affordable transportation.

While the temple is worth a visit, it might not warrant a special trip. However, if one is in the area, it serves as a quiet retreat. It is located near the Chao Phraya River, and can be reached by taking the Orange Express Boat to pier #13, followed by a short walk. Despite its quietude, the temple offers a rich cultural and historical experience, making it a must-visit for those interested in Thai art and history.
