About Wat Dokkham Temple

Wat Dokkham, a quaint temple nestled in the old town of Chiang Mai, is a serene spot that invites visitors to pause and meditate. Its welcoming atmosphere is complemented by comfortable seating, making it a perfect place for quiet contemplation. The temple is frequented almost daily by locals and tourists alike, who find solace in its peaceful ambiance.

Despite its size, Wat Dokkham is a charming temple that is always worth a visit. It may not be as grand as some of the other temples in the city, but its quaintness adds to its appeal. It's a place that you can easily stumble upon while exploring the old town of Chiang Mai, and it's always worth a look.

Wat Dokkham is conveniently located close to Thapae Gate, making it easily accessible for visitors. It is one of the lesser-known temples in the city, but it is free to visit and offers a unique experience. The main temple is adorned with fine pictures on the walls and houses plenty of artifacts. There is also a smaller building outside that houses a Buddha statue and other figures. A small, fine stupa graces the courtyard, adding to the temple's charm. However, visitors should be aware of the dogs that roam the courtyard. They may bark and appear menacing, but standing still and allowing them to sniff usually calms them down.

Like Bangkok, Chiang Mai is home to numerous temples of varying sizes. While the larger and medium-sized temples often draw the most attention, the smaller ones like Wat Dokkham offer a unique charm. However, unless you have ample time, it may be best to prioritize the larger temples.

Wat Dokkham is a well-maintained temple located near Ta Pae Gate. It's a place you'll likely pass when walking from the gate to Somphet Market. While it may not house any sensational or rare artifacts, it is an average Thai Buddhist temple with beautiful wall paintings inside the viharn, or main building. The chedi, or stupa, behind it is very shiny and seems to glow during sunset, adding to the temple's allure. There is also a second, much smaller building that houses another Buddha image. If you happen to be in the vicinity, it's worth a short visit.

The temple is also near Tha Prae Gate and is worth a brief visit. It is a small temple with a pagoda and shrine adjacent in the grounds. The interior is very decorative, although there are more interesting temples in the old town. However, it's worth a look if you're passing by.

While Wat Dokkham may not have any particularly memorable features, it is well patronised by local office workers, especially during lunchtime. The main hall may be closed at times, with only the smaller building open for worship. Despite this, the temple still offers a unique experience for those looking for a quiet place to reflect and meditate.
